But no State Law can protect these or any other tree from the terrible fires that have swept parts of California lately. Do you get similar forest fires up your way, Diane?

I happen to live in a broad basin that is mostly sage, grass and scattered juniper. The thick forests are in mountains around us, but we don't live in them. (You can see this on the map.) Those who do live among the tall trees are nervous all the time about fires. There is a bad problem with smoke, though, as the fires surround us and the basin acts as a smoke trap. All it takes is a couple of fires within a 100 mi. radius. We even collected smoke from the British Columbia fires. Smoke can get to dangerous levels and that's when little kids and old people like me stay inside.

P.S. By map, I mean one of the Klamath Falls, Oregon, area, not the one where this shot is.

It's on course to get worse, worldwide, though of course not in the UK or other damp places. Yes, it's terrifying and I don't know how my son works around it all summer and fall! Thank you, Rosa.

Yes, you did! The southern ones are prettier, more shaped by the wind than broken like these are.
