Eclipse Complex firefighter

Photo by my son a few nights ago. This is west of Happy Camp, California, in the Klamath National Forest. "Complex" means there are several fires in the same area, which sometimes join up and make one very large fire.

They are lighting treetops to deprive a nearby fire of more fuel upwind of it.

An age old method. The fire of London in 1666 was stopped in this way (by burning swathes of houses ahead of the fire to stop it spreading further).

Thank you, Andy, I'll let him know! I think this is a bit more unpredictable in the wild, winds being unpredictable and, at times, fire coming from several directions. It's kind of amazing that they'd already know about that method in 1666.
