Me, David and Mom's chin

Me, David and Mom's chin
Somewhere near Brookings, Oregon,1950. My coat, leggings and hat were red. We were possibly on the highway to the California Redwoods.

Cool- did you also have a red cap? I remember quite a few family photos with cut off heads or feet;-)

Yes, the cap was red, but I have no memory of the leggings. I suppose they matched. Ha!

Yes, I've seen a lot of cut off heads, too. I wonder if it had something to do with the view in our Kodak Brownie cameras.

I don't even remember the hat or leggings, just the coat. I even remember choosing it at the nearest department store, about 30 miles away. Also remember really digging in my heels over that red coat! Mom said I chose my own clothes from that point on because she got tired of arguing in stores. Ha!

Oh yeah. Over a darned coat! But, kids throw a fit over small things. That's the job! Anyway, who would want brown if they can have red? Thanks, Don.

Obviously you didn't mind being easily seen, even as a kid.

Funny thing is, I was shy in childhood and even now in a group. But, my favorite color is red (Pompeii red, to be exact) - go figure!

For years I've been trying to deconstruct 'shyness', there's something wrong with how we (the culture) use the word. I was described by many as shy, but was in school plays and school bands, and became a teacher and an activist. Many other teachers that I know also describe themselves as 'shy', but standing in front of a classroom doesn't exactly fit with 'shy'. I suspect that being uncomfortable interacting in groups is something different from shyness, since many overcome that discomfort by being being very obvious (different color clothes, public speaking).
