The tall handsome one is my dad, age about 22. US Coast Guard, probably in Astoria, Oregon. This would have been before shipping out to the Philippines for the duration of the war. Unfortunately, the original was left in the direct sun for a long time and I tried to fix it up a little in the scanner. It's somewhat better. The protected part at the top shows how good it could have remained!

There is a sentence on the back in my grandmother's handwriting, but it is also faded so badly that I can only make out a few words ("plenty high prices."). Maddening!

Zach, David Hodson, kiiti and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

well, scan is good, but you can make more rendering with contrast if you desire......

Hahaha - well, I'm handsome like he was as an old man! Thank you for the laugh, Cheryl.

If you scan the message on the back and try reversing the colour of the image ( Negative) it is possible that you may be able to see 'ghost writing'. Try using different colour filters. Most photo programs have them. An old CSI trick. It may not work, but worth a go. :)

That's a great idea, David. I was trying to think about methods last night. I just rec'd my very first scanner (yeah, a few years behind) and am having some trouble figuring out how to use its editing features. It's not a fancy one, but still...
I have another one that will not scan no matter how many times I try. Puzzling.

Complicated but interesting (and emotional) work. I can not give you any recommendation. Good luck.

Yes, it is emotional to look at these photos again. I did discover it's just not a good scanner, but that's OK. : )

Gracias, Graciela.
