Wheal Coates tin mine, then and now. For Andy

Wheal Coates tin mine, then and now. For Andy
A chance to compare the same scene taken almost 35 years apart. The left photo is my original slide conversion as seen on our dear old Panoramio, posted in 2008 but taken c 1986. The right hand side was taken last week, ie October 2021. Looking at the composition and viewpoint of these, it looks to me that my skills have waned over the years :) but the scene has not. See next photo for a more modern look and historic description.

This is especially for our Ipernity friend Andy Rodker who knows this Cornish St Agnes Head coast and mine intimately. It is my wish that he will one day soon, walk these paths again after his recent illness.

Essential full screen.

Good to see you here Dave. Yes, this is where Andy spent a lot of his early years, his parents living in the nearby village of St Agnes itself. His own Ipernity pages are full of photos taken around here.

An interesting comparison and note, Herb. Two good images, the older one with the benefit of misty weather.

Aye, the same scene with just slightly different weather conditions and p.o.v. Glad you liked them.

Yes, a great place to explore. This was the lower main mine but there are more expansive works above this and better to look around. You see what I see with the composition here.

All the best to you too. Herb

I always enjoyed the original picture Rosa as it gave an impression of the rugged drudge of going down t' pit from their home villages above the coast here. Glad you liked the comparison.

A fascinating pair of comparison image Herb. I like both, but I prefer the most recent image - I think the light is much better and so is the detail.

Such a great idea and very well executed.

I would echo your words and wishes about Andy. I'm sure he will love these images.

I enjoyed putting these alongside each other. I even cut out the original photo from the old black stripped border then pasted the new photo into it so that they looked more alike. Got to agree about quality though but I am with Toz above in that I think the original p.o.v. and focal length was better than todays.

You can read Andy's thought below :) Herb

You will remember Andy that we exchanged Panoramio mail about our Wheal Coates photos many years back. You will remember too how I liked this stretch. ~ Delighted that you managed to get to see this photo and my dedication said in admiration of your own St Agnes captures. I look forward to your brand new ones from here too.

Keep healthy. Herb

That's very kind of you, Herb. Yes I remember our Pano mails on the subject well. Not sure when I'll next return but hopefully fairly soon!
