Ruskin's View, Kirkby Lonsdale

Ruskin's View, Kirkby Lonsdale
Back in Kirkby Lonsdale we take a look at this famous view.

“Feast your eyes on a breathtaking panorama of the Lune Valley and Underley Hall – the famous, heavenly Ruskin’s View. This scene was painted by the artist JMW Turner in 1822 and the picture so impressed the 19th century art critic, social theorist, painter and poet John Ruskin, that he wrote: ‘I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.’ In 1875, Ruskin described the panorama as ‘one of the loveliest views in England, therefore in the world’.” www.exploresouthlakeland.co.uk

To approach this view, one walks through the grounds of the beautiful Norman Church of St Mary the Virgin. See PiP

Oh heck that means another photo beating for me no doubt :) Joking apart, great that you too have had a chance to stand here. I presume you might have gone down the steps and back to the old bridge too. We never went down the steps as was on limited parking time. When I got here, I realised that I really needed my wide-angle lens which I had left in the car. Ah well, another time. I look forward to your photos from here.

Cheers, Herb

Great information! It must feel so good to stand where Ruskin admired this wonderful view Herb.
Two superb pictures. Cheers, Rosa.

Thanks Rosa, it was a great place to stand and admire this spot of which my photo does not do justice. (Maybe Toz's one will -when he post it). I have also stood at the spot where Turner painted 'The Crook of Lune' scene -further north of here.

I've just googled the original Turner painting....................and not much at all has changed in this view since it was painted.............long may that remain true1

Despite what you said to Rosa, I think you have done yourself (and the view) proud with this beautiful shot! Great work my friend..!!

I love that ornate gate in the PiP and the church is very attractive. I was struck by the unusual placing of the clock!

Haha, I did the same with that painting Keith. I thought he had taken far more art liberties than I take :) So very pleased that you liked this one. I took a number of photos but I could not get it as I wanted. That PiP and the church clock -it all looked a bit modern to me, a bit like a battery crystal one. Glad that you liked that as well though,

Keep safe. Herb
