Memories of Tuscany: Classic Siena

Memories of Tuscany: Classic Siena
My last photo from this wonderful city is one of the main streets up to the high centre of town. To me, this was my favourite shot of the trip. Its…well, just so classical Italian. I love the straw coffee colour of these buildings and any artist out there might be familiar with a couple of the main names for their paints: ‘Raw Sienna’ and ‘Burnt Sienna’, which are both very similar colours to what you see here. I wonder if the names derive from scenes of Siena like this?.... Our Ipernity friend Daniela, below, provides the answer.

If it was not for the cables, this could be mistaken for a print of old Italy! A superb picture Herb. Cheers, Rosa.

Thanks Rosa, I did have a A4 laser coloured print of this but gave it to a relation. As you say, without the cables and also the scaffolding this could be an old-masters painting perhaps. Many thanks for the appreciation.

"Sienna (from Italian: terra di Siena, meaning "Siena earth") is an earth pigment containing iron oxide and manganese oxide. In its natural state, it is yellowish brown and is called raw sienna. When heated, it becomes a reddish brown and is called burnt sienna. It takes its name from the city-state of Siena, where it was produced during the Renaissance. Along with ochre and umber, it was one of the first pigments to be used by humans, and is found in many cave paintings. Since the Renaissance, it has been one of the brown pigments most widely used by artists.

The first recorded use of Sienna as a colour name in English was in 1760"

For me also one of the best, i love the old roofs so much.

Ah Daniela, with your comment here, I have been educated! I had no idea that the names of these pigments were really derived from this area. It was only a wild guess on my part. Your research and information here has opened my eyes. Thanks so much my friend for that.

Good to know that you too take much pleasure from this scene.

Keep healthy and happy. Herbert

So good that I can keep enticing this type of comment from you Keith. I cannot add more to your observations. Really great that you too enjoyed my stay in Siena some years back now.

Beautiful, Herb. I think people have said it all. I can only add that I love the angle and the play of the soft light on Siena's famous brown colors.
Have a great evening!

Thanks so much Annalia. I know that you love this town too but unlike me, you have more opportunities to visit it. Do you get bored with it? Hard to believe that you would but....

Hi Herb

A very nice picture!

My first thought when I saw it in thumbnail was that it was an old picture of Rochdale..
But obviously it isn't!!

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Have you ever been to Rochdale my friend. I know the main market street is steep and in fact has some interesting cobbles but to compare it with this... that's taking imagination too far :)
Glad you liked it.

Take care and HANW. Herb

Love this image and the color. And thinking: those houses are so photogenic, but probably a nightmare to live in and keep up!
(Having said that, I lived in a very old house in Switzerland once that was only the shell of a very old house and perfectly modern inside.)

Herb Riddle club has replied to Sarah P. club
Thanks Sarah. I think you would be right about keeping living in them. Very happy that you liked it just the same. Living in Switzerland was always a childhood ambition of mine, but high in the mountains in a flowered chalet!!! I envy then your memories of which I hope all were good.

Take care and enjoy the weekend. Herb
