Dunottar Castle

Dunottar Castle
A rather dramatic view of this splendid castle upon almost an Island just south of Aberdeen, Scotland. It was possible to visit inside too but I had to resist that temptation.

Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress located upon a rocky headland on the northeastern coast of Scotland, about 2 miles south of Stonehaven. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified in the Early Middle Ages.

What a great picture, Herb. And what a great feeling it should be to stand there. You should see it in big !!!

HaHa Lothar, I know that you like my monochromes and can recognise photos done with feeling. Yes, it was a great spot to stand in and for my friends here, this will not be my first photo of this castle. -Very happy that you took the trouble to see it full screen, as you say, well worth experiencing.

To be honest I did see an old mono of this castle in a similar light in a book and enjoyed it and so I thought I might try it too. The light sets the scene, for sure.

Wow! Such a magical image! The castle is just stunning and must have been pretty impregnable sitting up on that massive lump of rock.

The light and sky are magnificent.............and the whole image has a really mystical feel to it.

Beautifully taken and processed to monotone Herb..!!

Herb Riddle club has replied to Keith Burton club
Hi Keith, good to see you here again. Yes the castle is stunning but only from certain angles as the only impressive part is the old tower. I think the inhabitants thought it was impregnable but the famous William Wallace captured it in 1297. Mary Queen of Scots was here in 1562. It sure has a lot of history that you can see in the link in the description. Great that you like my vision of it here with the help of a little hdr and sepia. I have some nice coloured versions of the same castle done some days later that I shall put on here too, as well as a pending HFF shot. As always, just happy that you enjoyed it so my friend. ~ Herb

Just happy that you enjoyed this my friend. Such historical places, I always consider if they may look better in monochrome.

Herb Riddle club has replied to David G Johnson club
Hi David, it was a place for a church originally! Although this looks like big solid rock it is actually quite grassy, which I shall show in another photo later. Was a great place to freely explore the setting but it cost to explore inside! However, we never had the time to do that too. Very happy that you liked my version here.

You could not pick a more perfect spot to shoot the photo from I love the mono tone look as well it heightens the mood of the place. Great way to bring Scotland to life.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Hi Steve, a treatment to heighten the mood as you say and I must admit that I liked the results. More coloured versions will also appear here in my account but as you say, this is my starter for this Scottish trip. Glad you liked and approved it Steve. ~ Herb

A dramatic scene indeed and beautifully processed and presented. Now I'm irked that we visited Stonehaven some years ago and weren't even aware of this nearby!

Hi George, great to see you here again. Good that you liked this scene and my presentation of it. I can understand your feelings if you really did miss this on your visit just up the road from here. I know how you feel though as I have been to quite a few places - spent time there relaxing taking the odd holiday snap and then some time later find out that I missed the real gem just around the corner all the time. Research is everything, as my good wife says.

I really like this treatment, especially the dramatic sky, so suited to a rugged Scottish castle!

Nice to see you again Peter. I now have the good-weather version on here too (see PiP) and that is rather nice too but like you, I prefer this atmospheric version. As you say, it so suits the ideas that we have of Scottish castles.

You take some fascinating photographs and have obviously travelled far and wide to take them. I am imagining being there and what would I have done with this scene and I doubt I would have come up with anything as striking as this.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Colin Ashcroft club
Hi Colin, good to see you here. I still don't think I have traveled as extensively as you in Scotland and have certainly not got to your lovely Munro peaks. However, as you say, I have been to quite a few places now and this NE Scotland was one of the places missing for us. To come yet, is our second week near Braemar with your more traditional Scottish landscapes. Anyway, great that you approve of my treatment here and maybe you will take a peek at the other version too (follow PiP). If you have not been here - I can recommend a visit.

Best Wishes, Herb

I have seen little of the East Coast and Dundee to Peterhead is unknown to me but I have been to Braemar and Royal Deeside a few times. Much more often my visits have been all points left at the top of Loch Lomond. Your PiP is certainly more like my kind of shot :-)
