Eiger- North face

Eiger- North face
A blast from the past here. One of my January 1989 slide shots taken on skis, at sunset from Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen, Switzerland. I was reminded of this scene whilst photo-site travelling today. Some viewers here might remember this being in my Panoramio account too. A favourite spot for me, especially after reading the famous 'White Spider' (North face climb attempts) by Heinrich Harrer.

Bergfex, John Cass, Roger (Grisly), ColRam and 26 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks for this Marie-claire. You see, I have been taking photos for some time and took many on my ski trips to Austria and Switzerland. All on slides which I digitally scanned in 2012-14. Of course we forget how the colour shifted on that material and so never know how accurate these colours are now. We went up in the cogwheel train inside this rock-face to the JunfrauJoch and Eigergletscher too.

I got there as a teenager on a family holiday. It was a great treat after doing a school presentation on the history of the attempts on the North Face after reading Eiger Direct by Peter Gillman and Douglas Haston.

Great to see you here Colin. Like you, I found these stories of the North Wall climb both exciting and intriguing. To sit at the same hotel balcony where the climbers and rescuers watched the tiny figures on the rock was a thrill to say the least. You must have been pretty pleased at being here to see the mountain, yourself Colin. Did you go up through the wall on the train? Anyway, glad to have brought back memories here for you too.

We were staying in Interlaken and this was just one day up the mountain in the train so yes very memorable. The weather had been so stormy and we kept waiting for a better day and stood for a long time waiting to see some of the North Face to be visible - it did (I will post a photo when I find the scanned slides). it’s the only time I have ever stood there (1970!)

Eee that's 20 years before this nearly. It was my third time at Wengen, fourth in this region. Each time at Wengen, for one week's skiing. Wengen was incredible and I long to visit again but the prices are prohibited. I look forward to seeing your Eiger. ~ H

Wow! You are so lucky to have visited this iconic mountain Herb! I remember it only from the movies I'm afraid : The Eiger Sanction, starring Clint Eastwood in the mid 1970s.

This is a wonderful image..........the light on the mountain is just stunning and it looks superb against the deep blue of the sky. It's difficult to believe this was a digitally scanned slide - the quality is excellent and is testament to how good your original shot must have been..!!

Herb Riddle club has replied to Keith Burton club
Again you honour me with your words here Keith. Yes, I have seen the Eiger Sanction a couple of times too -a long time ago now. As you say the light at that moment was great and I was lucky to catch such an image with my Canon A1. In truth I had to clean the slide up somewhat but I am glad it has come across OK.

What a beautiful image, Herb. I am so glad you posted this as I've never seen it and wasn't part of panoramio. What a view. And you know, I am so often inspired to visit some of my photography archives so I can process this or that, all based on pictures I've seen while commenting! :) I really love that! :)

Herb Riddle club has replied to Janet Brien club
As always Janet, your visits along with your comments are well worth waiting for. Yes, like you, I do visit a lot of other peoples photographs and many times think, I have got one like this somewhere too, almost always gathering dust in that great electronic stockroom. Now and again, I manage to find it, as is this case with this. It seems that this has inspired some of my other visitors to find their similar ones too, see Colin above and Peter below.

Take care, Herb

Hi Herb,

A wonderful picture in great light. I don't remember it from Pano, but I do remember standing on the same spot and taking my own picture of this. I'll try and dig it out and post it. Meanwhile here is another one from Kleine Scheidegg. www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/44658850 (which you may remember from Pano too)

Best Wishes

Hi Peter, very happy that you liked this too, and that it brought back happy memories for you - much more recent than mine, even. Yours is indeed a wonderful capture, especially with the all-important red train. After posting the description re Panoramio, I realised that it was in fact in my second Panoramio account (yes, I had two). An account that I had quite a number of scanned slides included but also an account that I was not so active on. Like you with mine, I cannot remember seeing this in your Pano but it is probably more to so with my aging brain than anything else. :)

Thanks Herb for bringing back memories we stayed at Wengen in 1990 one day we got the cable car up Mannlichen walked across the tops to Kleine Scheidegg got the Jungfrau railway to Jungfaujoch then up to the Eigergletscher . Then back down to Kieine Sheidegg and walked back to Wengen in time for evening dinner happy days.
All the best TOZ. Thanks

Herb Riddle club has replied to TOZ club
Ah, another of my friends here who has shared the pleasure of this area. That sounds like a grand walk Toz, so I presume it was in Summer. I loved skiing in that area, like you from the top of the Männlichen, to the wonderful village of Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg and Innerwengen. Th opposite side of Lauterbrunnern from the summit of Schilthorn to Mürren was also a dream but extremely challenging. When we went up to the Jungfraujoch the temp outside was -25C. Happy days, as you say. Thanks for sharing, my friend. ~ Herb

Most impressive! I have never been that near and never have manged to see the mountain without clouds from afar...
Herb Riddle club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you Gudrun. Yes from afar and below in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen these iconic mountains were often shrouded in mist and cloud. However from higher, we were often looking at blue skies above, well over the lower clouds in the valleys. An impressive sight in reality.
Thanks for the call ~ Herb

Good that we share more than mere photos and geographic coastal walks Andy. As you say Harrer's White spider was gripping but like you, I also read and still have his 'Seven Years in Tibet' which was another superb telling of that wonderful place. Glad you liked this one.

This is really a great capture of the Eiger north face in the evening light!

By the way: => Here you can see the position of the both windows in the north face where you have a look up and down the wall and down in the valley and Grindelwald.

Thank you Poly, I am very happy that you have enjoyed this, taken in this light. I much appreciate the star too. I have followed your link back to your own excellent close-up capture of the rock-face which shows on closer inspection the two windows of which I too have gazed out-off. It really does demonstrate the sheer size of this. face. Thanks for the visit and info.

Another of my friends that has read that book. I am amazed! After reading that I bought and read several other books of conquering the North face. I also read 'Seven Years in Tibet' and saw the film. I think that shared experiences like that are akin to us sharing our travel photos on here. Very happy that you enjoyed this old slide.
