The silver sands and silver skies of Dogs Bay

The silver sands and silver skies of Dogs Bay
Dogs Bay in County Galway, near Clifden and Roundstone must surely count as one of the most beautiful that I have ever set foot on. With sand as soft as silk its no wonder that the trailing sea leaves so many tiny channels. We see here the changing sky from the blue morning clarity to the coming rain storms.
The home of two of my recent HFF fence pictures on here too, just to my right, behind me here!
See NEW pip with two older ones here.

As usual, a must for full size on black.

Such a vast landscape.................and beautifully composed. I like the leading lines made by the channels in the sand and the sky is breathtakingly beautiful.

Yes, it was pretty big and also exaggerated here by my super wide 11mm lens. I need this though to catch the real depth and feelings here. Another for your wall then :)

The wide lens certainly does a fine job .. particularly on the 'pip' 'Beach HFF'
Best wishes to you Herb'.. from Dave.

Hi David, many thanks for this visit and comment. This lens is very nice and particularly sharp. However it has two strange characteristics: it has a tendency to vastly over-expose the skies when used at 11mm and it has a very cold cast finish. The original perfectly exposed single shot of this taken at my usual minus 0.3 exposure, the sky was burned our completely but the sand was dark. The only way I can get these shots right is by using at least one other shot taken at minus two stops and mix the two in hdr style. All three pictures here are in fact hdr shots. I did not have this trouble using my wider 10mm Nikon lens, or at least not as much. The cool output suits these scenes well but I am now having to mix a bit of warmer colour and reduce the blues too for others.

I was about to comment how the wide angle lens really brought out this image, then I saw your note above. It's a never ending source of interest how different the results of different lenses can be. Anyway, all the effort you put into this has been well justified, Herb.

Thanks for your observations George. Yes, no matter what we do, there is always something to else to muddy the water. At the end of the day, I have to say, has this taken a good picture and the results speak for themselves. - I still have my Nikon 10-24 too so I should do some more with that perhaps but I know it is not as sharp. Thanks for the call ~ Herb
