O’Flaherty’s Castle

O’Flaherty’s Castle
Seen on our Roundstone trip. Also better known as Bunowen Castle. A chance sight but well worth recording here.

Seated on Dun Hill in the area of Bunowen, County Galway. Built in the 1500s and overlooking a private beach which in the old days was used as the main access here for the ‘Ferocious O’Flahertys’ were seafarers; the head of the clan, Donal, even married the legendary pirate queen Granuaile (Grace O’Malley). In its ruined state it looks poignant and romantic across the lake. The reeds make a good foreground and the lght is lovely. Mono is a good choice.

Hi Keith. The original one on here was much lighter but I think that this darker one sets the mood better. I too like the foreground though.

I think the B&W really suits this one. Dark, clouds threatening rain, and the ruins of a castle... The scene for some real horror stories!

Aye Andy, as the old film 'Whisky Galore' -set on the Islands West of here' demonstrated, there were many smugglers in Ireland too. Good that you enjoyed this. ~ Herb

Sorry to butt in!
Just had to say that I saw the film here in Spain, dubbed into Spanish. Sadly there was no option to switch backwards and forwards to the original Scottish accents as that would have been hilarious to compare the two! But it was funny enough as it was!!

Be my guest Andy. Must have been mighty strange in Spanish but I have seen many films and series dubbed into German (Which I have a grounding off) including some Monty Python sketches and to hear John Clees in a high voice speaking in German is more funny than the original. I await the next repeat of that grand old film 'Whisky Galore' in English of course. I know they did do a remake of that in 2016 but I don't think I have seen it. ~ Herb
