great Steve. we only get the 2/3 part on the right with the Sag area near the horizon. We never get the LMC and SMC which are so nice in your picture. Did you ever try some detailed work on the SMC and LMC?

As I dont have an equatorial mount I have never tried but as its fine this weekend I will try with my 50mm and 105mm and see what I get.the biggest killer is time with longer lens. Its certainly worth a try. Many thanks .

DJ you certainly see two clouds

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magellanic_Clouds

The big and the small when I get some clear weather I am going to try and get a photo of them if I can. Welcome to our black night you will find plenty in my gallery. all the best from down under.

Thanks Steve,,, I have had an interest in astronomy and more so 'Cosmology' since being fascinated by 'Carl Sagan's 'Cosmos' series back in the 70s.
I know and understand the technique of capturing night sky photo's such as your excellent work here... but I've never had much success. Probably city lights and my lack of finding clear regions.
Thanks again and all the best from Dj.

DJ I can tell you its easy as I have done the hard yards and I understand just what I am doing but its easy to follow as you already know. Herb has taken the few steps to try with my help.

the end result comes with some planning and understanding I can only recommend if you have the gear that can handle the night work its 100% worth the effort. as you can see by this group I started.

Fanatstic as always! I am proud to say that I manage to recognize the Magellanic clouds instantly,-) I do hope you didn'tz put yur tripod in the middle of the road....
Steve Paxton club has replied to Gudrun club
I always believe the two clouds are part of the sky show so I do my best to always have them in the shot. Yes at 11:45pm I was squarely in the middle of the road not even in a 1 horse town it was so small and sleepy to get this shot and I saw not a car. I wear a huge white coat at night so I cant be missed. Yes the best part of living in WA and getting out in the black.Glad you enjoy the night as much as I do.

Peter I hope you get the chance if you see a night just try that will start your interest. its not hard as you can see once you take the first step. try for stars at first then once you can get comfortable the planning for the milky way is not that hard. glad you like the shots, All the very best from down under.
