The Burgenland is the most Eastern province (Bundesland) of Austria. For centuries, it served as a battleground between Austrians and various nations from Eastern Europe. Until 1921, when it finally became an Austrian province, the Burgenland was under Hungarian rule. Today, the Burgenland has a population of approximatley 280,000 - the smallest population of all Austrian provinces (Bundesländer).
