Small Skipper on Knapweed. Thymelicus sylvestris on Centaurea species.

Small Skipper on Knapweed. Thymelicus sylvestris on Centaurea species.
Or possibly the Essex Skipper, Thymelicus lineola

These little butterflies were ubiquitous here, flitting around in the tall grasses and mostly sipping nectar from hard-heads, Centaurea / knapweed..

What fine details you've captured! Super angle and dof. What a lovely skipper! There are several species that visit our property and they are common enough that I've actually gotten quite a few very nice pictures of them! www.ipernity.com/search/photo?w=290645&q=skipper
I'm not so lucky with butterflies but after years of trying the nice images are adding up! :)

TY for the visit! Fun to hear about what it's like where you live...Steve and I hope to spend time over in the British Isles at some point...we'll rent a camper van and enjoy creeping all over the place. Not sure though because we'll miss our bird terribly!

Lovely macro! Well taken, Amelia.

I would agree that it is a Small skipper and not an Essex skipper. The accepted way of telling them apart is by the antennae: the Essex skipper has very well defined jet-black tips to the antennae, especially on the underside, "as if they had been dipped in ink".
