Fragaria vesca. The wild strawberry

Fragaria vesca. The wild strawberry
Wild strawberries are much smaller than the garden varieties, but infinitely sweeter and tastier. The flowers are tiny - about 12 mm. The plants were growing on a bank by the side of a rarely used unmade road. Now I know where to come in the summer when the fruits appear.

Sylvain Wiart, ColRam, Fred Fouarge, Nouchetdu38 and 31 other people have particularly liked this photo

I used to love eating the wild strawberries straight off the plant when a child. Haven't seen one for ages, which is probably due to my lack of observation rather than a lock of wild strawberries.

Something to look forward to x

A wonderfully sharp and detailed image. I remember picking and eating the strawberries about seventy years ago in Ireland. Now I let them run riot in the garden and they get eaten by birds, insects and me too.

Talking of birds, Jean, there seems to be a dearth of small birds in our garden this spring. Normally I'm filling feeders ones every 5-6 days, but certainly not a t the moment.

I saw your comment and Rosalyn's and replied to hers. I hope it's just a blip and nothing more. My bird visitors do go down a bit in the spring but not so far this year. We've had a very wet winter and spring is late so that may be why they are still coming in force. My present concern is bees. My crocuses are usually full of them but are now nearly over and not a bee in sight.

I have to admit I'd not previously heard of wild strawberries, Amelia. A beautiful close-up image.

A beautifully sharp macro shot Amelia. I love the wild ones as well. I remember my late mother-in-law made some wild strawberry jam once...only a small pot but it was sweet and so delicious with a lovely aroma.

Where I lived when I was a child there were a lot of places I knew where to find them. The good old times.

Excellent composition Amelia. The flower really stands out against the background and is beautifully sharp and detailed.

Not many birds about in my garden either.............but I do have bees, hover flies and bee flies!
