Jøssingfjord. The Helleren houses

Jøssingfjord. The Helleren houses
Helleren is a large cliff overhanging two houses at the end of the Jøssingfjord, on the southwestern coast of Norway.

They were built in the early 19th century and abandoned in the 1920s shortly after the first road was opened. The houses are preserved as they once were, as houses for poor families subsiding on a combination of farming, sheep herding and fishing.

The rooves are made of wood, as the cliff protects the houses from adverse weather. Inside they are both very basic. It must have been a very hard life.

Fascinating that they still stand.... I'd be scared stiff of rockfalls!

A fascinating image and background info, Amelia. You've done well in controlling what I'd imagine was a significant tonal range too.

Very nicely composition of an interesting sight, great framing. They remind me of houses from around the same time that I have seen in fishing villages in Newfoundland.

The house has been built nicely into the space available for it and looks pretty sturday - but in common with others, I wouldn't feel at all safe living under all that rock..!!

It's a cracking image though Amelia.........and an interesting narrative..!!
