Blackfriars. St.Andrews. In front of the Madras College.

Blackfriars. St.Andrews. In front of the Madras College.
Blackfriars is the modern name for the Dominican friary of St Mary which existed in St Andrews, Scotland, in the later Middle Ages.
Behind this ruin is the Madras College which I attended from the age of 11 for almost a year before we moved to England. I am not listed in the famous Alumni, but one of my good friends, Gavin Brown, is: Professor Gavin Brown (1942 – 2010) - Professor of Pure Mathematics at University of New South Wales, Australia . I used to sit next to him when we were at the Burgh School. He was very brainy.

Thank you, Roger. At break rimes it was the custom to walk round the large quadrangle, girls going one way and boys the other. It was possible to meet someone you liked at most twice. ;-)

St.Andrews is an historic burgh, so any thing like Blackfriars is well maintained, Dany. My old school is in the background.

Beautiful old stonework and a very prestigious school. Not only would I not be on any lists of famous alumni of the schools I attended. No one would ever ever have heard of them.

It sounds as if I didn't know how lucky I was! I don't think many people, apart from those who live in Fife would know about the madras College - until now, Ron. ;-)

Lovely series of "school" photos Amelia, with charming stories to go with them. You have a good memory - I can can barely remember anything of my schooldays except that I hated nearly every minute of them..!!

I loved school, Keith, until we moved to England. I was sent to a Secondary Modern because they didn't accept the Scottish 'Qualify', and sat twiddling my thumbs for about 3 months until the authorities saw fit to test me on the 11+. I then went to an all girls school min Aldershot. I really didn't like it there except for biology and music lessons.

I left at age 15 to join the RN...........without any qualifications at all. I evenually got a couple of GCEs when I was around 25 years old and evenually (through the Open University) got a Bsc (Hons) degree...........but it was hard work. I needed the GCEs to get promotion, but the degree was just to prove to myself that I could..!!

If only they did, Nick. I might have made something of myself, as I sat next to Gavin Brown for 2 years when we were at The Burgh School. ;-)

They are - until now, Gudrun. The next school I went to was built with red brick, looked vety boring, and all the girls spoke with a strange English accent. ;-)

Lovely old buildings Amelia, it puts my old school buildings to shame... surplus WW2 Army huts!!.. still, it was somewhere to sit in the cold... YS.. John.

I remember that when I was training to be a teacher at Madeely College in the late 60s, some of the lessons were conducted in Nissen huts, John. The conditions were atrocious! At least when I eventually went to Keele uni, all the buildings were made of red brick. ;-)

Same as John; prefab huts surrounding a concrete space for playing football in the breaks with a tennis ball and knees scraped to shreds!

At least prefab huts were better than Nissen huts, Andy. I wonder how we all became so well-educated! ;-)

I remember Nissen huts at my junior school. I suspect that with fewer distractions in these places we had little choice but to concentrate on our lessons. But I didn't learn all that much at school, it was all through reading books - I was an inveterate bookworm. There were (and still are, I'm pleased to say) many like me.

A lovely old structure, but my goodness, how many impressive stone schools there are in St Andrews!

Amelia club has replied to tiabunna club
This is the only stone built school in the town that is still a school, George. The town, apart from being the home of golf, is very historic, everything is well maintained, and the house prices are amongst the highest in the country! ;-).
