Sorry for the outage / Désolé pour l'interruption de service

Sunday July 1st, 2007 at 08:00PM

Hello friends,

Today at 20h24 our servers have been flooded. There have been thousand of connections from the same IP, causing our database to stop accepting new connections. This problem was hard to discover as we have a lot of normal connections every seconds. We had to analyse all logs to understand.

We're very sorry about this, and we did not imagine someone could be so rude with our servers. Have we forgotten the net can be a jungle ? for a minute we did. And we will take immediate mesures to avoid this kind of outage again. - event if everybody knows it's hard to fight against a denial of service.

Thanks for your indulgence.

I imagine it to be really hard for a service like Ipernity to determine whether such thing is normal or malicious traffic. And the actual source of the problem might not even be aware of it because some malware got installed... :-(

Thanks very much for this information. This is really appreciated and gives reassurance in your service!

You're right. There is really a lot of things to check here. We have traces & monitoring, but this does not always show the origin of a problem. Thank you for your support Carsten ;)

No worries Christophe. I better deal with stuff like that than being nutted by the bad "f" :o))

Just go on the way you guys do. All good mate. ;o) And I really think you also should take your time with releasing new modules. Better they work 100% than having hassle with hoff. (omg, this was bad ...) :o)

Not sure if you have any layer exists between the login page and database. If there is one, you can set the limitation of the number of sessions from the particular IP to login through this layer. Well, the group will still need to work on the load balance problems if the service would like to grow as Google or Flikr (Yahoo).

Would love to see the improvement becuase this is really a very cool site...

Christophe Ruellepro replies:
Hey Zachko would you like to help us ? ;) just joking, you better have fun with ipernity while we're working out these little troubles. Yes, we have an accounting system and a load balancing system. We have done major improvements to the architecture last week. Or course we will always have to improve it as long as it grows.
Thanks for your kind comment. Cheers
