Exhibition Report

Hi Everyone

As the previous post was put up, to advertise and advise of the exhibition, I though I would write a short report on the event. Some of you may want to organize this sort of thing yourselves.

As back ground information may be of interest, I am giving some here.

The exhibition venue was booked last November (2007) and it's use was offered free to the three of us, on the basis that there would be images from the local area.

The three of us as friends, decided to get together for this show have varying interests.

Keith Tranah had been a miner for 25 years and had obtained a permit to photograph down the 'Pit' and developed into an expert in paint by light photography, has amassed hundreds of stunning images on film and hand printed them of working life of a miner up to 1999, when finally all of the mines in the area we live had closed. He has since been shooting images various subjects, landscape's, creative, urban, details etc. In mono and colour.

James Mason has is studying and doing an HNC in photography and has started up a portrait studio in a small way to finance his studies, he works in all mediums and specializes in portrait, figure studies and glamour.

I have been photographing various subjects as you can see in my photo steam for over 50 years, I have recently been shooting glamour, for the first time in my life, having avoided shooting people for years.

The venue for the exhibition allowed us to exhibit in the region of 100 prints , set up a small portrait studio and exhibit some camera's and mining equipment.

We set up on Friday morning and had a couple of local newspapers visit for pictures to supplement the press releases we had given them.

The show ran from Noon on Friday to Sunday evening, over 1260 visitors passed through the exhibition, including 40 invited guests we had there on Friday evening, who comprised of family, friends, fellow photographers, local councilor, studio owner, models, etc . Everyone said they enjoy the event and praised the mining images in particular.

This exhibition has been a great success for the venue, 1260 visitor in two and half days, compared with an average of 4000 a month! We have been invited to do more exhibitions because of this!

This show took a lot of work to organize and set up. Meeting visitors and seeing your work exhibited is a great experience and well worth the work to do.

I hope you find this blog of interest.

Some pic's will follow

PhotoShelter Collection

Hi Everyone

Some of you might find the thought of selling your images of interest.............

This new stock library has recently started in business. With editing policy that favours the ''quirky'' image and less stringent image quality requiements. Lots of point and shoot stuff in the collection as well as the more traditional stock.

My images are here :- mp.photoshelter.com/user/viages

The main page is here :- mp.photoshelter.com

It is free to submit to the collection.

Addictive? Süchtig?

Dear Agony Aunt

Is self portaiture addictive???

I posted a shot yesterday, my first ''serious'' attempt at clicking my self........... I took about a hundred .........

I decided I should have tidied myself up a bit...........

Got up this morning decided to look pristeen, showered, shaved, dressed in pinkish!!! shirt..........

Set the lights, changed the umbrella's from white to silver, lowered the flash head power, to enhance my complextion, combed my hair again, ( I usually only do this once a day, if need to or not), off I went clicking, posing, like some demented model.

150 shot later, I stopped clicking, drained, sweaty and shaking.!!

Do I need help?

Flash Geoff

N.b. Please don't publish my name, I feel so ahamed.............

German Translation from Google was crap! A friend has done this.

Liebe Tante Agonie,

An Analysis of Judging by Eddy Sethna FRPS AFIAP

Bellow is a part of an article about judging an image, which relates to all of us who peruse other members images on ip. The full article link is here   http://www.monolandscapes.talktalk.net/judging.htm

The Message of the Picture

Appreciation of all art, including a photograph, is not primarily an intellectual exercise but an emotional one, which may be pleasurable, depressing, moving or frightening. It is the feelings, emotions and mood that a picture conveys which is the core of the 'message' and should form the basis of evaluation of a picture.
Good judging is done more by the heart than the head, with the ability to feel a picture and not just visualise it. It is the buzz and tingle which one experiences on seeing a good picture which is at the heart of judging.
More often than not it is difficult to verbalise feelings and emotions that a picture conveys, and not all judges are blessed with verbal facility. A judge who finds it difficult to express feelings and emotions about a picture should not feel he is alone but rather should realise that almost all people find difficulty in this area. Like all abilities, this one increases with practice and, once acquired, adds so much value to a judge's comments that all should strive to achieve it.
It is neither essential nor important for a judge to find out what the author of the picture was trying to communicate. What matters is what feelings and thoughts it engenders in the viewer - the judge. More often than not a good picture conveys different things to different people and credit should be given to a picture that manages to do that. Ambiguity of a picture could be its greatest charm by providing an image on which viewers can project their own thoughts, feelings and imagination.
Besides the feelings, emotions and mood, there are three other things that a picture may convey. These are:
a: A statement or a story.
b: An idea or inventiveness.
c: Interpretation of the beauty or any other quality of the subject.

Commended Print

I have just had this image commended in the Cannock Photographic Society Annual Exhibition, it was entered in the general colour print section, printed and mounted by myself, it makes this commendation all the more enjoyable.

The fact that this image had such a good response to me posting it here and on Flickr made me decide to enter it into the competition.

Thanks for all of your comments and votes...........

Your 'Youth' has fallen from its shelf,

And you have fallen, you yourself.

They knocked a soldier on the head,

I mourn the poet who fell dead.

And yet I think it was by chance,

By oversight you died in France.

You were so poor an outward man,

So small against your spirit's span,

That nature, being tired awhile,

Saw but your outward human pile;

And Nature, who would never let

A sun with light still in it set,

Before you even reached your sky,

In inadvertence let you die.

Holiday.............Great!

I am off on holiday to Ireland (Eire) on Thursday for 9 days. Great place to to take photographs, I am told.

Going to visit some friends I have not seen for eighteen months, they are both artists, so maybe I can snap a few shots of them working.

Maybe the groups will be up and running, the thing I miss most.............. when I get back.

Be Good

Lookin' Good

I think at the moment, as this site is just up and running, it has that sense of 'new' community and expectation of new features (groups etc.) making it a little more interesting.

Since the censureship issue has been going on at F.....r there has been a noticeable drop off of activity there in my opinion, has anyone else noticed this?
