About the Festival

Every year, for one week in April, the City of Cannes takes a step back from the moving image and celebrates the birth of film through the photographic medium.

Throughout the Palais des Festivals, along the famous Croisette, selected hotels, city landmarks, streets and beaches, will showcase dozens of unique photographic exhibitions, welcoming the residents and visitors of the Cotes D'Azur.

The week-long celebration will include evening film screenings, retrospectives of renowned photographers such as Elliott Erwitt, book signings, special events including 'Evenings with the Artists', exhibition tours led by the artists, after parties and of course the centrepiece event: The Sony World Photography Awards Ceremony, Cocktail Party and Gala Dinner, hosted in the Palais des Festivals.

For the photographic industry, there will be many tailored events. These will include talks on topics such as book publishing, portfolio reviews by known industry experts, networking venues and events, an international student programme, exhibition tours, focus media events and discussions hosted by some of the world’s most renowned photographers, editors, publishers, gallery owners, curators and other industry experts.

A significant portion of this week-long festival will focus on the annually chosen central theme, using the power of the photographic image to teach, educate, discuss and share the information from countries across the globe.

The World Photography Awards chosen theme for 2009 is The Environment. Dedicated blocks of activity pertaining to the global environment as shown through photography and will form an important part of the daily festival schedule.

The Festival is aimed for the general public and welcomes families, locals, foreign visitors and all those with a love for contemporary art, the still and moving images.

Improvements: Network and Explore pages

Hello everybody!

We've just improved the Network and Explore pages.

The Network pages

Latest publications pages

  • Latest docs, albums and posts published by your network are now more accurate.
  • Several time frames are available.
  • At last, you can choose to display 1 or 5 docs max by member.

The members list page

  • Several filters are available (last added, last visited ...).
  • Display the people you may know (those in relationship with your friends and family)!
You might want to add them to your network.

The Explore pages

  • New layout for the main page, with a better content enhancement. We did our best to consider the various aspect ratios of photos.
  • Same for the "What's hot" pages. Photos, Videos and Posts are displayed separately for a better reading.

And also..

  • You can now choose between "Thumbnails" and "Details" view for albums.

Comments and suggestions are welcome. Give us your feedback.

Of course, we know your wishlist is long and you are still waiting for features such as collections or password access to albums. Be sure we are doing our best.
