The outage was caused by an extraordinary load on one of our databases which caused a side effect on the whole website. New "Suggest a group" feature

We've just improved the process to suggest adding documents to groups.

In a few words:
-- group admins no longer need to use comments to make suggestions (no more spam!)
-- doc owners are notified of suggestions in their Activity page
-- doc owners no longer need to join a group before adding a suggested document
-- suggestions are centralized for each document on its main page

Here is how it works now:

[1] Group administrators can now suggest adding docs to their groups using the "suggest group" button above each document.

[2] Suggested groups are now listed on the right column. This list is shown for group admins and document owners only. Not for visitors. So group admins can cancel their suggestions (clicking the [x]) and doc owners can accept or not to add their doc to a group. Doc owners no longer need to join a group before adding a suggested document.

[3] Doc owners are notified of such suggestions in their activity page.

After several months of hard work, we are proud to announce...

Welcome, developers! The API gives you freedom to create new applications that are powered by ipernity functionalities: web services, device applications, gadgets...

We've done everything to make the ipernity API simple and fun to use, even if you're not an experienced programmer. Each API method is implements a specific function and is well documented. Better yet, you can try every API method live. The ipernity API is compatible with all programming languages. There are also several API Kits to get started quickly.

Several groups are dedicated to the API including the API users group where you will find help, and the API development group where you can monitor current and future developments.

Ready to dig in? Visit the list of available methods or look at some applications that use the API.
We'll send a bottle of Champagne to the first three cool applications ;-)

The ipernity API is in BETA. During the coming weeks, we will continue to add new methods. Do not hesitate to give us your feedback in the API development group..

Dear members, since anyone can now write his own program connected to ipernity, cool features extending your ipernity possibilities will be put at your disposal very soon. Applications will be referenced in our 3rd-party applications directory. The best ones will be promoted in that blog.

Dear friends,

As you know, we are still working on releasing the ipernity API. Almost 80% is done but it's time consuming and while working on this project, we cannot progress on other improvements and new features (remember we are only 2 programmers). So we decided to make a short coffee-break last week to complete one of our "secret" projects ;)... BitTorrent!

As from now, ipernity proposes a solution to share voluminous contents such as full-lenght personal videos or entire folders of thousands photos, using BitTorrent peer-to-peer protocol and the new ipernity tracker.

For those who don't know anything about BitTorrent and how to use it, there are dozens of tutorials on the net. Of course, we won't let you down: Lea is writing a new FAQ entry and will put it online in a couple of days.

How does it work?

-- from ipernity, go to the upload page: you'll find a new "BitTorrent" section and your personal ipernity tracker URL. Keep this address in mind.

-- from your computer, open your BitTorrent client and make a .torrent of the file(s) you want to share, specifying your personal ipernity tracker. Then start seeding this torrent to make it active.

-- from ipernity, go back to the upload page, BitTorrent section, and import your .torrent file in your ipernity space

-- that's all!

Your .torrent file is considered as a doc in ipernity. You'll find it in "your docs" page, "others" section. Like all the other docs, it can be added to albums, posted in groups, faved, commented, tagged... and of course you can decide who can access your .torrent (friends, family or every members).

On the .torrent doc page, you'll find specific information: torrent status, seeds/leechers, name and size of source file(s)...

Authorized members who want to leech your content must download the related .torrent file and open it with a BitTorrent client. Of course you must keep your .torrent file active until at least one leecher completed the download.

We hope that solution will give you more ways to share personal videos and 100MB+ contents.

ipernity is proud to enable the first social mashup of the brand new Google Translate API.

Members and visitors can now request "on the fly" translations of posts, comments, discussions, descriptions, iperMails... written in foreigner languages*.

Translation is made from/into 23 languages*. Of course, automated translation is not perfect but we are convinced it brings ipernity members and visitors a real added value for a global understanding.

Thanks to this new feature, ipernity becomes the first social internet media facilitating exchanges between people from various horizons ;-)

(*) Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish. [EN] PicLens is a cool plugin transforming your browser into a full-screen, 3D experience for online photos and videos. See a demo here.

We'd love to make ipernity fully compliant with PicLens. It would give members and their visitors the possibility to view photos streams, photos albums, even photos posted in groups... on a 3D full screen black wall. Klass!

We implemented a basic RSS-based integration of PicLens, allowing for instance to view through PicLens the last 20 posted public photos of one member. You can try by installing PicLens plugin, then going on a "member docs" page, then dragging your mouse onto one picture, then clicking the arrow icon.

1. You can now rearrange your docs stream!
How does it work? By simply changing the posted date. You can edit this date document by document (through one doc page), or using the DocManager.

2. We changed the sharpening algorithm to make it smoother. Older photo thumbnails will be automatically regenerated in a few days. You'll understand better by reading Alan's post.

3. You can now permanently link the originals outside ipernity. We previously provided temporary links.

2. Wir haben den Schärfungs-Algorithmus etwas weicher gemacht. Ältere Vorschaubilder werden in ein paar Tagen automatisch neu generiert. Um dies Besser zu verstehen, lesen sie Alans Beitrag.

3. Sie können die Originalbilder nun auch von außerhalb ipernitys dauerhaft verlinken. Bisher haben wir nur temporäre Links bereitgestellt.

1. Vous pouvez désormais changer l'ordre d'apparition de vos documents !
Comment ça marche ? En changeant simplement la date d'import. Vous pouvez modifier cette date document par document (à partir de la page principale d'un document), ou en utilisant le DocManager.

2. Nous avons modifié l'algorithme de netteté (sharpness) pour produire des images plus douces. Nous allons appliquer cet algorithme aux photos déjà publiées dans quelques jours. Vous comprendrez mieux en lisant l'article d'Alan.

3. Vous pouvez désormais utiliser des liens permanents sur les originaux en dehors d'ipernity. Nous fournissions auparavant des liens temporaires.

[NL] Zoals we vorige week reeds bekend maakten "wij verbeterden vele verborgen delen van de service ...en enkele zichtbare delen, waarover we het later zullen hebben". Het is nu tijd om al een paar zichtbare verbeteringen aan te kondigen:

1. U kunt nu zelf de volgorde van uw dokumenten bepalen !
Hoe werkt dat : verander eenvoudig de datum van invoer. Je kunt zo dokument per dokument behandelen of gebruik maken van de Docmanager.

2. Het algorithme van de scherpheid (sharpness) is gewijzigd om zachtere foto's te tonen. De reeds bestaande dokumenten, worden binnen enige dagen gegenereerd. Voor meer duidelijkheid , zie Alan's bijdrage.

3. U kunt nu ook permanente links voor uw dokumenten, buiten Ipernity toepassen. Wij leveren de tijdelijke links op voorhand.

[IT] Come vi abbiamo detto la settimana scorsa: "... abbiamo migliorato molte cose "sotterranee"... ed alcune visibili di cui vi parleremo in seguito." E' giunto il momento di parlarvi dei primi miglioramenti visibili (altri arriveranno molto presto):

1. Ora potete riordinare le vostre foto e documenti!
Come funziona? Semplicemente modificando la data di caricamento. Potete modificarla documento per documento, o usando il DocManager.

2. Abbiamo cambiato l'algoritmo di sharpening (affilamento, nitidezza) per renderlo più morbido. Le miniature delle vecchie foto verranno automaticamente rigenerate nel corso dei prossimi giorni. Capirete meglio leggendo questo articolo di Alan.

3. Ora potete avere dei link permanenti agli originali dei vostri documenti fuori di Ipernity. Precedentemente vi fornivamo solo dei link temporanei.

Nous avions préparé cette mise à jour depuis deux semaines et nous avons fait notre possible pour la faire aussi courte que possible. Nous avons amélioré de nombreuses parties cachées du service (le système de stockage des documents et la réplication de base de donnée) - et quelques éléments visibles dont nous parlerons plus tard.

Avevamo preparato questa manutenzione da due settimane ed abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per far sì che fosse il più corta possibile. Abbiamo potenziato molte funzionalità "sotterranee" (sistema di memorizzazione, replicazione dei database, ...) - ed alcune cose visibili di cui parleremo in seguito.

ipernity ist nach acht Stunden harter Arbeit seit 18:20 Uhr (GMT+2) wieder online. Diese Wartungszeit war seit zwei Wochen eingeplant – und wir haben uns bemüht, sie so kurz wie möglich zu halten. Wir haben viele Dinge „unter der Kühlerhaube“ verbessert (Dateisystem, Datenbankverwaltung) – und außerdem ein paar sichtbare Dinge, die wir Euch später erklären werden. Ni plibonigis multajn "subsurfacajn" aferojn (konservan sistemon, dinamikan kopiadon de la datumbazo, ...) - kaj kelkajn videblajn aferojn, pri kiuj ni parolos poste.

ipernity är tillbaka 18:20 (GMT+2) efter åtta timmars hårt arbete. Vi har förberett detta underhållsarbete i två veckors tid och har gjort vårt bästa för att göra avbrottet så kort som möjligt. Vi har förbättrat mycket i det fördolda (lagring, databaskopiering..) samt några synliga saker som vi kommer att berätta om senare.
