[EN] Promote your photos on a giant screen in Berlin Ku’damm with Ford Fiesta!

In October 2008, Ford Fiesta gives ipernity members the chance to be promoted on the Ford Fiesta Mega-LED-Screen (104 m2!) in the middle of Berlin Ku’damm.

Look at that, wow!

If you would like to see your pictures there, simply join that ipernity group: This is now! and add your best photos.

The pictures should portray the theme "This is now" and be based on people, hobbies and favourite places and scenes.

Convince our expert jury with your share - snap the chance to win an original iPod touch®.

This is brought to you by the new Ford Fiesta and supported by ipernity!

.

[DE] Berlin will dich sehen!

Why should I give away my photos to a multi-billion dollar company to use in their advertising to get more people to buy cars that are destroying the planet? This is bull! Just paying one iPod for all that free advertisement material is a bargain we should not give them!

you are right about the co2 footprint, but 'forteller' does have a point, though.

Why should I help that company with their advertising without being paid?

There is only a very little chance to receive a - probably - single price with a rather little value (compared to the costs buying all those images provided.)

This is one of the campaigns which play with the vanity of the contributors. Being published - YEAH - but this time not even in a book/magazine or a website with a certain constancy, where one could refer to. The majority of photographers will not even be able to take a kind of screenshot at Berlin. And looking at the picture above I sugggest the artists will not be credited, either.

No, thanks. It is the car company which will profit from the deal, not the Ipernity member.

btw, it would be interesting, how much they paid for being announced here ...

Iljuschinpro replies:
The payment is maybe the little ad for ipernity on the screen, or maybe some bucks for them. Would it be better if flickr supports this ad? I have much fun with the community here, so anything that helps this going on is ok. If I want to earn money with a pic I would enter a stock agency. I posted mostly pictures of berlin, for me this is just fun to know that one of my pics are shown on a big screen in berlin...

Btw: I my first car was a 1. generation Fiesta. I really hated this ugly Gokart. :-)

widderson replies:
preparing an advertising campaign in Germany and offering Ipernity the deal, only means this car company has followed the discussion on German amateur photographers due to the policy of some picture sharing sites. It also means, they have learned something about reputation and probably prefer not to work with a disputed brand - esp. in that country where the hassle escalated.

But this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact, that this campaign is just another attempt to exploit amateur photographers by tickling their vanity - no matter which partner may profit besides.

I would handle this issue a bit different, if Ipernity explicitly said, they are in trouble and members could help by distributing their work for free. Actually, this is not a charity campaign.

Just for the record, it is not my intention to denounce Ipernity as a traitor or something like that. As a commercial enterprise they are free doing their business with every partner they accept. But potential contributors should be aware of what they are doing.

In this case there is an invitation to send pics to the group page, but it is up to the participants to even clarify the basic conditions, and who wonders, the presenter is not able to answer all questions to the point, not to speak about missing translations. Classical example of receiving maximum return with minimum input.

As a matter of fact, this campaign is based on one of the main “Web 2.0” problems, usually called:
You work, I earn the money. The subject has been discussed over and over again on other boards.

There is no reason to trivialize the actual operation just because everything works so nice here at this place.

Too bad I have to agree with you...

I also don't want to denounce the whole campaign and of course it is an opportunity for photographers to show their pictures on a big screen to a lot of people. Still, you are right that the benefits lie on the company side.

I am also concerned about legal aspects. I have so far not seen (and despite searching found) any detailed information on e. g. license issues. What about CC-licensed shots? How e. g. will the attribution aspect be implemented?
Does Ford obtain publication rights only for this special occasion or also for other campaigns?

Another issue to me are personality rights.
The shots are supposed to "be based on people [...]" - but what about a photograph of a person who does not want to appear in an advertisement (unfortunately this "event" is nothing else) of Ford or have his/her face displayed on a big screen in front of a multitude of people?
I hope that all photographers who participate are aware of this and at least obtain approval of pictured persons.

You perhaps should read this:
www.ipernity.com/group/mittenimjetzt/rules/2 [EN]
or
www.ipernity.com/group/mittenimjetzt/rules/5 [DE]

The group's rules explain the legal aspects.
You do not offer any license to Ford except for showing the pictures on the mentioned screen in Berlin.
The legal acpects of the photo itself for sure is in the photographer's responsibility - as always!

And anyway I can not understand this discussion at all.
No one is forced to put his or her photos into the group's pool ... if you don't want to offer your work to Ford then just ignore it ...

True.
As always I respect people's choice to participate in what they feel like they want to participate in. I am _not_ telling them what to do. I mereley find it necessary to consider different aspects and then decide on this basis what to do. I will always respect a deliberate decision.
That is what this - and every - discussion is/should be about. Presenting different considerations and standpoints.

Accordingly I will _not_ accept people telling me to just keep quiet if I beg to differ.

Well - that was not my intention at all.
Perhaps I wrote in a wrong style - I did not mean you with "you" :-)

I just got the feeling from some posts that this idea of advertisement is going to be talked down and I just don't think that something like that should be done here.

I talked about the exploitation of user generated content. This “idea of advertisement” as introduced above is exactly that.

And now, you will tell me, what is wrong about discussing that.

Dominik [ corcordis.de ]
Dominik [ corcordis.de ] replies:
Well "you" means anyone just trying to talk this stuff here down.
I am not against discussion - discussion is good. But in a fair way.

It is just not fair to call this kind of advertisement "exploitation".
Anyone who wants to take part does it with free will and is able to get any information he or she needs before contributing his or her pictures.

That's why I _don't_ think it is wrong to discuss it - but to discuss it this way.

Umh... I have little problem to share my photos with almost anybody, including car makers, NGO or a local drugstore. I shoot them just as a hobby and if someone can take profit from them it's ok for me.
I haven't post the photos in the group because I want an iPod: I know the chances to win it are absolutely low and btw I think Apple in general heavily sucks. I've done it because I find it funny. Just thinking about someone in another city stopping for a minute and looking into the screen to see any of my photos makes me smile.
Of course, you're on your right to refuse the game. But don't take it so hard, it's just that... a little funny game.
