Some improvements: rearranging your stream, sharpness...

Wednesday May 21, 2008 at 01:17PM

[EN] As we told you last week: "...we've improved many "underground" things... and a few visible things that we'll speak about later." It's now time to talk about the first visible improvements (others are coming very soon):

1. You can now rearrange your docs stream!
How does it work? By simply changing the posted date. You can edit this date document by document (through one doc page), or using the DocManager.

2. We changed the sharpening algorithm to make it smoother. Older photo thumbnails will be automatically regenerated in a few days. You'll understand better by reading Alan's post.

3. You can now permanently link the originals outside ipernity. We previously provided temporary links.

and for very soon...

HD video, watermarking...

1. Ora potete riordinare le vostre foto e documenti!
Come funziona?

大青森pro says:
About the "softer" previews: they work pretty fine for the small images. But the "big" image is much to soft, nearly unusable, when uploading image originals in 1200*800.

Example:
www.ipernity.com/doc/largegreenwood/2044114/sizes/b
vs.
www.ipernity.com/doc/largegreenwood/2044114/sizes/o

I have to admin this picture is not the "sharpest" I've ever taken, but the "big" size just looks totally washed out, nearly unusable, in my opinion. This is a twist, as the original is only viewable for logged-in persons, and can't be linked elsewhere, either.

The "large" picture on the other hand looks pretty well. I think it heavily depends on the size of the original vs. target image size. For me, sharpening would need a little bit more tweeking. :(

Rearranging of the stream + other upgrades => great stuff, thanks! :)

To be honest, I can't perceive any difference between your two examples. Is it just me?
Posted 17 months ago. ( permalink / translate )
大青森pro replies:
Well, I don't know. For my perception, the region around the eyes of the thingy look clearly unsharp or "washed out" in the "big" version. A little bit more sharpening applied after the scale would produce a - for my eyes - better result here, I think it's much to blurry. But that might very well be dependent on the scaling ratio. Maybe I'll try some different "Original" resolutions; it's possible that using a bigger "Original" resolution leads to better results (i.e. 2048*y).

kOoLiNuSpro replies:
Uhm, I can easily notice the difference on 4 different PCs with different screens and operating systems ....

Fred (also on http://flickr.com/freeed) replies:
Actually both links point to the very same picture page (despite the /o vs. /b at the end of the URL). It seems like some rights are not set correctly so most people probably can't see what he's talking about.
Posted 17 months ago. ( permalink )
大青森pro replies:
That might be true, but should be easily circumventable due to the new permanent file links to originals :)

So, here again the SECOND link directly to the "Original":

u1.ipernity.com/6/41/14/2044114.784c4c45.o.jpg

edit: UHM... why does that URL not work? *scratching head*

Of course it's the same picture, as it's the sharpening applied after the resize done by ipernity which does not make me 100% happy. The old sharpening was quite harsh, a little bit "to much", but especially when a scale ratio of 0.8 is applied, the new sharpening seems to "soft" to me. Scaling down i.e. about 0.5 (the "medium" picture in the photo stream), the new algorithm yields great results.

I think, a little bit parameter adjusting should do the trick completly.

It's a problem because the original (which has a much "better quality" for my eyes than the "big" version when you upload pictures in 1200*800) is not accessibly by not-logged-in members...

not a big issue, though. But it would be nice if further tweaking might be possible or is considered by the team :)

i have a dirty trick.
you have a download original button.
when you click it you get a link. delete teh parameters in that link and you get the link to the original JPG.
Posted 17 months ago. ( permalink )
Iljuschinpro replies:
More easily, point on the original picture, copy with right mousebutton the graphic url and paste it where you want. For me that´s ok because the graphic url itself is scrambled with a random id after the point, but you can access the big sizes even without: Use ip without login, (you do not see the sizes option menu) choose a pic and type ../doc/[username]/[picid as seen before]/sizes/1024. I think this is not ok. Why this is not a protected area?

I´m glad to have now the opportunity to re-arrange the pics in my stream. Usually visitors do not check the albums but have a direct look into your docs.

Unfortunately I´m not totally satisfied.
When uploading new docs which should be seen after some already uploaded docs I CANNOT edit the latest doc posting date to an earlier one. I only can edit the posting date of the older docs to a newer date.
So I have to edit the dates of all my older pics when I want to have the latest upload at the end of my stream.

On flickr you can edit the posting date of each pic back to the time of your 1st log in.

make it quick and dirty... give the last upload an older date... and then it's the last one and you have to change just one photo. And even in here you can change all photos at once back in time... with the docmanager as team ipernity wrote above.
