There was a time, not so long ago, when I was practically a bleeding heart because I was so incredibly liberal...
There was always a reason why people behaved badly...believe me I'd find that reason and announce it to all and sundry...
But then things began to change...and now I find I'm often seething with rage over newspaper reports or something on television. No longer do I ferret out a reason why...now I just want justice.
There is a report in one of today's newspapers on-line of a solicitor in England who left her Boxer dog shut in the kitchen of her home without food or water until the dog died a slow and agonising death...the photographs are simply horrific. It is said the solicitor suffers from 'mental health problems'...un recognized by her work colleagues? How could that be? Un-recognized by her mother with whom she went to stay when she left the dog? Didn't any of her clients...and one must presume she had clients...didn't any of her clients think she was behaving in a way which indicated she was mentally ill?
Sentencing has been put off until next month.
Someone both Himself and I knew in England has recently been sent to prison again for animal cruelty. He allowed a two year old cob pony to starve to the point of death. The pony was clearly visible from the windows of his house and was left out in the bitter cold of last February...racked with worms and with no food, water or shelter.
He didn't plead mental health issues but is apparently totally unrepentant and wondering what all the fuss is about. As well as a short prison sentence of twenty-six months, he's also been banned from keeping any animal for the rest of his life.
I know that man...he comes from a decent family with no question of abuse or poor parental care. His brothers are both professional men with good careers. There was a time when I'd have searched for some inner reason behind his abject cruelty towards animals...now I just think he has a vicious evil streak.
You cannot force anyone to have empathy towards other sentient beings...it doesn't work that way.
Another report on line was a series of black and white photographs of an asylum in Kosovo. Imagine the worst photographs you ever saw of the children's orphanages' in Rumania and double the horror. Teenagers with their hands tied behind their backs with rope...half naked with their heads shaved, lying in heaps on the dirty floors. Wandering about in a sort of courtyard filled with rubbish and rubble...eating from a plate on the floor.
Once I'd have defended the staff in a place such as this...poorly paid and with little in the way of basic provisions...washing machines that work and that sort of thing. Now I want to scream at them for doing sfa about the people under their supposed 'care'...a piece of string tied across that awful courtyard would provide a basic washing line for the children's dirty clothes...a few plastic bottles with half a dozen pebbles and the tops secured make a good noisy toy for a child with nothing at all...bits of old rag tied up to represent a doll...
There is a long running campaign on some sewing site or other to make frocks for little girls from an old pillowcase...and it's a good campaign and a worthy one...but it is for small Black children who look sweet with their hair in corn rows wearing a flowery frock...
What about the dirty, drooling children in an orphanage...those with twisted limbs and crossed eyes...
There are always going to be people who are cruel and unkind and unthinking...and I suppose we have to learn to live with it...but now I'm finding that awful hard.
