You know I often get quite cross over many things I see, hear, or read...I try really hard to see both sides of a story and yet occasionally there simply doesn't seem to be another side...
Following a link about something or other this afternoon on Facebook I saw another link...which left me speechless. It's a short film of seabirds nesting on a remote island in the Pacific... beautiful filming, especially of the baby birds who are unafraid and allowed the cameraman to get really close to them.
Then the camera panned to a dead adult bird. It's belly stuffed full of rubbish. And then another and another...one had a toothbrush and a nailbrush in with plastic bottle caps and bits of twine and fragments of fishing net...all inside its stomach. Some had those brown plastic bottles you get medication in...another had a metal nail file...but they all had dozens of plastic bottle tops...
The adults unknowingly kill their babies by regurgitating the rubbish they pick up as food for the young to eat...
The island is 2,000 miles from the nearest continent...it 'ought' to be a pristine environment...it looks heavenly actually...but those birds are dying a horrible and totally un-necessary death because man is bloody ignorant and presumably thinks the oceans will wash away the rubbish they toss from boats and leave behind on beaches...
There are no two sides to this...wild seabirds cannot be blamed for picking up a plastic toothbrush because they imagine it is edible...they can't be shown the error of their ways...they can't be taught to avoid the rubbish they find to feed their hungry chick...
The blame...and it is placing blame...lies squarely on the human race.
