The National schools were closed today for the voting for the Referendum so the shop was stuffed full of small people getting under their Mother's and Grannies feet and looking longingly at the sweeties...Himself had to buy Millie a cheap lead from the limited selection because he'd left her lead at home...no lead, no walk in the town. Millie tends to suddenly decide to cross the road if she sees something interesting on the other side.....................not an awfully good idea if the something happens to be an enormous dog with a slobbery mouth and feet the size of dinner plates. I bought two tins of biscuits and a tin of Roses chocolates 'cos they were half-price....I shall squirrel them away until closer to Christmas when they'll be handy for visitors....there's usually only half a packet of digestives that have gone a bit soft to offer because Himself wades through several packets of nicer biccies every week........the specials on dried fruit and brown sugar haven't been put out yet. Every year the shop has a display of all the ingredients you'd need for a cake and a pudding and everything is half the usual price.............Mother always made the cake in January and then fed it every week with drops of Brandy....come December it could practically walk about on it's own. She never did get the hang of making icing though....it'd be hard as a rock and she'd sprinkle those tiny little silver balls all over it that stuck in your back teeth and took fillings out without a bother....the first week of January saw us at the dentist having them replaced.................................When we came home and had eaten lunch, Henry called. Henry and Mary live at the old station house down the road from us....and I simply couldn't take my eyes off his hair. Henry has jet black hair going grey at the edges....and he wears it quite short and neat. Today his hair looked like.......a sort of hairy reddish hat I suppose. And it was plonked...right on top of his head. There seemed to be an awful lot of it if you follow me.....so I don't think I was listening very carefully while he told me some long convoluted tale about hay being delivered because I just couldn't take my eyes off his head.......................Himself had been down to Goulden park to see our other donkeys and met Henry on the way back.....I said 'Did you notice?' and got no further 'cos Himself said....he's wearing a feckin' wig!.................................................Now, Henry and Mary are eccentric, this is a given fact. They've always been slightly odd but recently they've gone all out downright peculiar. And you know how you can tell instantly when a child is fibbing? I can tell straight away when Henry is......and he tells huge porkies and then stands there looking innocent. Must think I'm daft altogether...................................We went into the NCF as well this morning....though it isn't called that anymore, for reasons best known to itself, and I bought a can of spray paint to do my stuck together cat and dog food cans....on the same shelf is spray paint for your appliances! Shocking Pink and Deep Violet were two of the colours that caught my eye....it would be fun to have a Shocking Pink washing machine.....might take a closer look next time I go in there....my little kitchen is a bit brown and that would give it a real pop of colour.................didn't do much this afternoon apart from starting on sorting out the drawers in the little sideboard thingy in my workroom and I brought the Pineapple Sage in 'cos it isn't hardy and a couple of the Scarlet Geraniums.....I did look at the underneath of the pots to see if there were any lurking slugs first mind you....don't need to encourage them indoors for the winter. I lit my little fire with some turf and the smell wafted about and Millie and Eilis settled down for a snooze and so a peaceful afternoon passed by................
