[EN] For the recent weeks I have been quite busy at the office so I could not dedicate any of my time to any photographic projects. It is not the matter of having much work to do but the thing is that at present I am utmostly immersed in the process of changing an employer. It is being quite trying but nobody said it was going to be easy, did they? (Read more below)
[ES] Durante las últimas semanas estuve bastante liado en la oficina, así que no pude dedicar ni un momento a proyectos fotográficos. No es que tuviera mucho trabajo que hacer, sino que en estos momento estoy inmerso en un cambio de trabajo. Está siendo bastante complicado por diferentes juegos políticos pero confío que pronto todo se resolverá con éxito. (Ver más a continuación).

[EN] Last Thursday, at night I had a shooting assignment at Heineken Theatre in Madrid where Innata (Natalia Vergara), one of rising stars of Spanish hip-hop and rap scene, was presenting her new album "Ama lo que Mamas", in loose translation "Love what you are nursed on". My editor provided me with a long list of celebs that were going to assist to the event so I had to be there and picture them all smiling and shiny.
Usually the event organization is pretty tight and celebrities are ushered either one by one or in consistent groups to the photocall floor where they stay for some seconds and let us - the photographers, harass them for a while. Not gonna happen this time.
No decent lighting just a couple of cheap 50 watt Wallmart halogen reflectors in a pitch dark concert hall. So here we are - the media: Europe Press, Hachette, Korpa and IPA waiting for the invited stars to show up, alas only two or three of them kept up to their words: Cristina Llorente (quite sweet a girl), Leandro Rivera, and Innata herself; nobody else. Shooting with ETTL+12/3 adjustment at ISO 200 my 580EX II lived up to my expectations. All of the commercial images had to be vertical full body shots or medium shots, so without a flash bracket I had to bounce the light against the card at 45º, a great technique by David Hill.
All of them were properly blinded with flashes, traumatized and released to the mercy of music and booze.
All of a sudden, just before the concert began, photocall lights are killed and all the media leaves. I thought: "Should I leave too, what the hell, karpe diem, enjoy the music". Innata's voice, sensual and appealing, was filling the hall with rhythm and freshness. So I stayed up and enjoyed shooting pictures, for my personal pleasure. After the concert as no other media was present I convinced Innata to pose for a unique portrait shot.

[ES] El jueves pasado, por la noche tuve un encargo fotográfico en el Teatro Heineken en Madrid, cerca de la plaza España, donde Innata (Natalia Vergara) -una de las prometedores estrellas de la escena hip-hop y rap nacional- estaba presentando su nuevo disco "Ama lo que Mamas". Mi redactor me proporcionó una larga lista de famosos que iban a asistir y mi cometido allí consistía en
sacarles a todos guapos/as y sonrientes.
Habitualmente la organización está bien hecha, los anfitriones llevan a las celebridades por la alfombra al photocall y les indican donde ponerse; éstas se paran allí durante un rato y nos permiten acosarles unos instantes antes de marcharse. Ese no fue el caso esta vez.
La iluminación era penosa y consistía de un par de reflectores halógenos de una tienda de "20 duros" instalados en una sala de conciertos oscura. Pues allí estamos los de Europa Press, Hachette, Korpa y IPA esperando que los invitados aparezcan. Pero esta vez solo unos pocos cumplieron su palabra: Cristina Llorente (una chikita muy guapa), Leandro Rivera y la propia Innata; nadie más.
Disparando en ETTL+1 y 2/3 a ISO 200 mi 580 EX II se lució. Todas las fotos comerciales tenían que ser verticales: planos enteros o americanos por lo que en dadas circunstancias tenía que rebotar la luz a 45º contra la tarjeta reflectora en vertical, una técnica genial aprendida de David Hill.
Los que aparecieron, cegados como dios manda y ligeramente traumatizados por nuestras instrucciones: "Mira aquí, muévete allá", fueron finalmente liberados y entregados a la merced de la música y cañas.
De repente, justo antes del concierto, las luces del photocall se apagan y los medios se marchan. Pensé irme yo también, pero si estoy aquí voy a disfrutar del concierto. La voz de Innata, sorprendentemente sensual e interesante, estaba llenando la sala con ritmo y frescura. Me quedé fotografiando a gusto hasta el final del concierto, cuando convencí a Innata a posar para un retrato.

[EN] A brand new week started on Monday... Gosh, I need an extra Sunday in my life once in a while. This Monday - a job interview I felt pretty exciting about and today - just as exciting new photographic project came up.
Yesterday Mexico's Felipe Calderon along with his wife Margarita Zavala and other state officials were welcomed in Madrid by the Spanish state secretary Trinidad Jimenez at Barajas airport. The primary purpose of this visit was to meet José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and attract foreign investments.
Cutting the long story short, as a part of official visit, Calderon's wife along with Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Greece shall be visiting the exposition "Goya en tiempos de guerra" at Prado Museum. This is the first time my agency assigns me this kind of "royal" assignment (heh).
So, appropriately attired, and correctly accredited, carrying my gear, I join the herd of accurately combed, packed and compactly organized flock of photojournalists, permanently re-shaped and ushered back and forth by the Royal Security.
The Queen was accompanied by Margarita Zavala and Astrid Casale (I guess she's the wife of Mexico's ambassador). All three of them seemed to be in a terrible rush, so the photographers had to shoot in extremely hard low-light conditions with famous paintings as a background.
Tremendous specular reflections, horrible lighting, and the speed. Under these circumstances the experiments showed good results at ISO 500, 1/160 and f/4, setting the flash unit to ETTL+2/3. From some 100 or so pictures only 5 usable, just as sad. These pictures are available at IPA Press website, so if you're interested you can get them here. [ES] Una nueva semana empezó el Lunes, increíble, creo que necesito un Domingo extra en mi vida de vez en cuando. Este lunes tuve una entrevista de trabajo que me gustó mucho, tanto como mi nuevo proyecto fotográfico que surgió hoy.
El presidente mexicano, Felipe Calderón junto con su mujer Margarita Zavala fueron recibidos por la secretaría de Estado de Iberoamérica Trinidad Jiménez en el aeropuerto Barajas en su primera visita de Estado. El objetivo principal de la visita era reunirse con el Pte. Rodriguez Zapatero y atraer inversiones externas.
En resumidas cuentas, como parte oficial de la visita, la esposa del Pte. Calderón junto con Su Majestad Sofía de Grecia, estarían visitando la exposición "Goya en tiempos de guerra" en el Museo del Prado. Es la primera vez que la agencia me envía a hacer reportajes de “casa real”.
Así pues, vestido adecuadamente y con una acreditación, llevando todo el equipo necesario, me uno a la multitud de medios que está siendo pacientemente vigilada por el servicio de seguridad de la Casa Real.
La Reina estaba acompañada de Margarita Zavala y Astrid Casale – la monísima mujer del embajador mexicano en Madrid. Las tres parecían tener mucha prisa, por lo que todos los fotoperiodistas tuvieron que trabajar en una situación bastante difícil: poca luz y carísimas pinturas de fondo.
Unos reflejos especulares, pésima iluminación equivalente a la oscuridad de medianoche y el ajetreo auto generado por todos los presentes. Bajo estas condiciones hice una docena de pruebas y los ajustes que mejor me funcionaron fueron ISO 500, 1/160 y f/4 con el flash en modo ETTL+2/3. De unas 100 fotos que pude tomar, ninguna buena y 5 usables, así de triste es la situación. Las 5 fotos están disponibles en la web de IPA Press, mientras que algunos ejemplos están publicados en este álbum de Ipernity.
[EN] Last Sunday, June 15th, Madrid downtown was transformed into a huge sports playground, where anyone –big or small- could play lots of different Olympic sports totally for free, just to celebrate the Sports Day and promote “Madrid 2016” bid for the Olympic Games.
The celebration was culminated by a pop music concert held at Madrid’s Cibeles Square. At 8:30 pm I was right there; ready to fight my way through the cheerful and celebrating crowd flooding the plaza. Melocos’ music, like a heartbeat before the stroke, was deafening. After searching incessantly for the press tent I gave up and headed straight towards the stage, where after having a friendly chat with the event’s staff, I was ushered to the press area.
Right between the stage and the zealous fans, the press loitered at will in a spacious isle, allowing us to do our work in a pretty relaxed manner. At once, I recognized ‘ol friends and buddies playing hide and seek behind their lenses. We come across each other continuously: at presentations, press conferences and other events: Pablo (1Fotografo.com), César (a colleague from IPA), David (a friend from Alto Volta and SPA), Roberto, a great Nikon guy, and some other familiar faces.
We were allowed only to shoot during the first 5 minutes of every performance, due to reserved rights restriction clauses imposed by discographic reps. The settings for this particular event, if I am not mistaken, were ISO 500 f/2.8 at 1/125-250 with ambient light. When flash was needed ISO 200 f/5.6 at 1/160-250 range was used (also depended on the quantity of coffee the particular performer consumed before going on stage).
Some nice pictures were taken of Pignoise, Melocos with Natalia, -the soloist of La Quinta Estación. Unfortunately her efforts to conceal so sensual a nipple jumping out of her tight dress were kind of fruitless (mean grin). The concert concluded with Chenoa and Nacha Pop’s performance. As per the latter I was surprised greatly to see the current state of Antonio Vega…see it for yourself.

[ES] El pasado domingo 15 de junio el centro de Madrid se convertía en una enorme pista polideportiva en la que se podía practicar deportes olímpicos de forma gratuita para celebrar el Día del Deporte y promocionar de la candidatura olímpica Madrid 2016.
La jornada se cerraba con un multitudinario concierto al aire libre en la plaza de la Cibeles. Me presenté a eso de las 8:30 de la tarde en Cibeles ya abarrotada de gente. Las canciones de Melocos llenaban de forma ensordecedora la plaza. Busqué sin éxito la caseta de prensa para recoger la acreditación pero nadie sabía nada del tema por lo que ni corto ni perezoso me acerqué al escenario y conseguí entrar tras charlar con los de organización.
Los de prensa estábamos en la primera fila, justo en frente del escenario y éramos los de siempre: Pablo (1Fotografo.com), César (mi compañero de IPA), David (mi colega de Alto Volta y SPA), Roberto y algunos más. Cachondeo, buen rollo, las fans gritando como “lokas”, fue divertido.
Podíamos fotografiar solamente durante los primeros 5 minutos de cada cantante, por el tema de los derechos reservados de las discográficas. Los settings si no me acuerdo mal eran ISO 500 f/2.8 a 1/125-250 (a ratos) sin flash y en pocas ocasiones cuando usé el flash a ISO 200 f/5.6 1/160-250 (según el nivel de agitación del cantante de turno).
Pude fotografiar a los Pignoise, Melocos y Natalia de la Quinta Estación a la que se le salía el pezón por lo apretado que tenía el vestido (jeje), Chenoa, y Nacha Pop. Sobre los últimos me sorprendió mucho el estado de Antonio Vega…

[EN] Some time ago one friend of mine mentioned to me something about The Light Hunters - Los Cazadores de Luz, while we were having one of these off hand "by the water cooler" conversations. At first I never paid attention but, as it happens, in the following days, as if by pure random chance, I started catching news about them in press, at buddy chats, words from colleagues, while shooting some events, and finally when I was looking for a gift at FNAC...there it was - the book by The Light Hunters under the National Geographic brand.
I got pretty interested so I seeked for more info. The "Cazadores de Luz" (gallery) is a closed group of 99 photographers founded in 2005 and experts in digital image processing, ranging from crazy dedicated amateurs to World Press Photo prizewinners. Award winning photojournalists the size of Steve McCurry are members of the group that also features fashion, sports, nature, travel, publicity and experimental photographers.
Before today I could never hoped to be a part of this group, although I realize that my images are not strong enough, I shall keep working and learning all I can to justify their invitation and towards taking my dream's photo.
[ES] Hace algún tiempo un amigo mío durante una de las conversaciones informales al lado de la máquina de agua me mencionó algo sobre los Cazadores de Luz. Al principio no me fijé demasiado, pero pasados unos días empecé a escuchar este nombre más a menudo: en las noticias, en charlas con otros fotógrafos, y finalmente mientras buscaba un regalo en FNAC…allí estaba el libro de los Cazadores de Luz bajo el sello de National Geographic.
Me empecé a interesar y busqué más información. Cazadores de Luz es un colectivo que reúne a 99 fotógrafos relacionados con la tecnología digital, desde aficionados a verdaderos expertos de talla de Steve McCurry, teniendo la suerte de contar con alguno de los profesionales más galardonados a nivel internacional, con premios como el World Press Photo.
El colectivo que reúne fotoperiodistas y fotógrafos de naturaleza, deporte, pasarela, viajes y publicidad, nació en el año 2005 bajo el paraguas de un foro privado de fotografía en la red y con el objetivo de crear un espacio común de investigación e intercambio de experiencias.
Hasta el día de hoy nunca pensé que podría formar parte del grupo. Sé que mis fotografías todavía no tienen suficiente fuerza, pero seguiré trabajando y aprendiendo para poder justificar la confianza depositada y poder tomar finalmente la fotografía de mis sueños.
