[EN] The day before yesterday, Friday evening, even though I was kind of down with a stomach bug, something had to be planned for this weekend. There are wonderful places full of precious scenes and images and some of them are pretty close to Madrid. This time, by chance, David -a friend of mine- suggested a photographic trip to Hoces del Duraton Nature Reserve in Segovia.

As I was not familiar with the surroundings and had to do this trip alone, the first and the most important task was to get my hands on a terrain map as well as park's general layout map found here. The next task was to get all the equipment neatly arranged in a backpack: body, lenses, memory cards, flash, batteries, tripod, food, water...

Saturday 17th, sound of reveille at 4:00 am. At 5:00 am I hit the road, still dark. In some 2 hours I arrived at Villaseca village, the first milestone and the starting point of the trip. Some 15 people all in all, living in this village, and nobody in the streets at this hour.

I have no idea where to go, there is no place to park, just narrow unpaved streets hardly to fit car's width. After driving around a bit, I park in some far out waste ground along with 2 other cars.

While I am preparing my gear for a long day's walk, I see a local farmer approach me with a dog. Greetings, questions asked, answers received. I grab all my equipment and take a long stroll from Villaseca to Ermita de San Frutos some 5 km.

Beautiful sights, dusty road, people in their cars pass by me, while I pant heavily carrying my stuff and stop ocasionally to take a shot or two.

Once within the reserve boundaries the surroundings are impressive, cloudy skies, intermittent gushes of wind, green fields all over the place - gorgeous views. Duraton river, abundant with water and fish, is framed by natural gorges that build up walls to 100 meters of hight, homes of hundreds of birds of prey: Griffon's vultures, Egyptian and Golden eagles as well as sparrow hawks.

Above the river San Fructus hermit built in VII AD. At 10:00 am the park starts receiving visitors, people commence their pilgrimage to the hermit and the graves of San Fructus and his brothers, located right behind the chapel.

I shoot images for hours under the sun, crossing myself once or twice with friendly forest guards. Images of landscapes, water, birds of prey and nature. 4 Gb of space, shooting one by one and deleting images. It is good to have space limitations, it makes you more picky about your work. I wish I had a 16-35 mm and a 400 mm f/2.8, as picturing birds would have been a less challenging task.

[ES] Anteayer, el viernes por la tarde, aunque seguía sufriendo de algún virus de estómago, pensé que debería planear algo interesante para el fin de semana. Hay docenas de lugares interesantes e imágenes maravillosas cerca de Madrid. Esta vez, David, un amigo mío, me recomendó por casualidad visitar la reserva natural del Parque de Hoces del Río Duraton en Segovia.

Ya que no estoy familiarizado con el entorno, lo primero es localizar un plano topográfico del terreno y también hacerme con un plano general de la reserva. La siguiente tarea era organizar todo el equipo en la mochila: el cuerpo, lentes, tarjetas de memoria, flash, baterías, trípode, comida, agua, ...

Sábado 17, mi despertador suena a las 4 de la mañana. A las 5 ya estoy conduciendo, sigue de noche. En unas 2 horas llego a Villaseca, mi primer hito y el punto de partida del viaje. En Villaseca viven unas 15 personas y ninguna aparece en la calle a estas horas del día.

No tengo ni idea por donde localizar el camino al parque, solamente estrechas callejuelas sin asfaltar, capaces de albergar un solo coche. Después de dar unas vueltas alrededor del pueblo, aparco en un descampado junto con otros dos vehículos cubiertos por el rocío.

Mientras que preparo mi equipamiento para la jornada, veo a un granjero local acercarse con su perro. Saludos, preguntas, respuestas. Cojo mis bártulos e inicio un paseo de Villaseca a la Ermita de San Frutos, unos 5 km.

El camino de tierra está rodeado de bellos paisajes que forman impresionantes composiciones. A medida de que voy caminando paro para tomar fotografías. Pronto empiezo a ver gente pasando en sus 4x4, dirigiéndose al parking antes de entrar a la reserva. Y yo mientras tanto sigo caminando y respirando con dificultad, arrastrando mi mochila, la cámara y el trípode.

Una vez dentro de la reserva, no dejo de maravillarme del entorno y la naturaleza: cielos manchados de nubes, rachas de viento, campos verdes por doquier. El río Duraton lleno de agua por las incesantes lluvias de la semana pasada ha ido excavado en la roca caliza durante siglos paredes de 100 metros de altura. Estas paredes ahora son hogar de cientos de Buitres Leonardo, Águilas Reales y Egipcios u otros pájaros de presa.

Justo encima del río se yergue la Ermita de San Fruto construida en VII AD. A las 10:00 el parque empieza a recibir visitas, gente comienza su peregrinaje a la ermita y a las tumbas de San Fruto y sus hermanos, que se sitúan detrás del ha ermita.

Llevo fotografiando durante horas, bajo el sol, cruzándome de vez en cuando con guardas del parque, con los que mantengo agradables charlas. Fotografío paisajes, agua, pájaros y naturaleza en general. 4 Gb de espacio, disparo uno en uno, borro y selecciono imágenes. Es genial tener limitaciones de espacio, me hace ser más consciente y selectivo con las fotografías que tomo.
