Drobo? What the f*** is a drobo?

Tuesday March 11, 2008 at 04:36PM

A drobo is a device to backup your files. Not very revolutionary...really?

After reading so many positive reviews on the internet, I decided to have a closer look at this great product. Yeah, it looks good. A drobo is not an usual drive-array with raid like the other solutions out there. You can attach up to four SATA-disk to this device. The device will sync the content from disk to disk. A great idea for a cheap backup-solution. Did I say cheap?

That is the great negative point on the opposite side. This thing is more expensive than a 1TB-raid-solution filled with disks (like a drivestation). In germany the price of a drobo without a harddisk is between 450 and 500 Euros. Damn! How stupid is that? I wonder if the company will stay alive with such an overpriced gadget. I´m not the one who likes to buy cheap crap. But this is a very exorbitant price for a device without any great features except the synchronisation.

Drobo? One of this proprietary USB storage solutions pretending to be a RAID system? I know the videos. This “synching stuff” only works, if there are only a few files on the disk. And of course, if a disk fails during access, it will crash! Yeah, it really will, because if the system wants to get data from a position in that is no data, it’s over for the data stream. *bam* error, crash. And i guess, because its proprietary, there is no other solution than “rebuild” the whole system, because usual RAID recovery tools won’t work.

And of course, there is only support for HFS+ and NTFS, two file systems that are completely-.. well, not useless, but: unused under Linux. I eard about an early availability in one of the beta versions of the Drobo firmware, but the latest stable only supports “non Linux file systems”.

Therefore, if i ever want to replace the Terastation with a Drobo (and i guess, i never will *g*), then only, if it supports at least ext3.

It´s just the hype. At photowalkthrough.com I saw the my first video podcast about this thing. It was a very positive review. After this video I´ve did some research and I was very disappointed about such a bad product.

Well, what was this with “hype” said by a Mac User? ;) This Drobo thing looks good and is well presented, but at least, it has a lack of usefull security features ;)

:) I suppose it is required to troll to write an intelligent comment here, so I will limit me to write this useless and stupid comment (sort of a Drobo comment, perhaps...)
