A drobo is a device to backup your files. Not very revolutionary...really?
After reading so many positive reviews on the internet, I decided to have a closer look at this great product. Yeah, it looks good. A drobo is not an usual drive-array with raid like the other solutions out there. You can attach up to four SATA-disk to this device. The device will sync the content from disk to disk. A great idea for a cheap backup-solution. Did I say cheap?
That is the great negative point on the opposite side. This thing is more expensive than a 1TB-raid-solution filled with disks (like a drivestation). In germany the price of a drobo without a harddisk is between 450 and 500 Euros. Damn! How stupid is that? I wonder if the company will stay alive with such an overpriced gadget. I´m not the one who likes to buy cheap crap. But this is a very exorbitant price for a device without any great features except the synchronisation.

And of course, there is only support for HFS+ and NTFS, two file systems that are completely-.. well, not useless, but: unused under Linux. I eard about an early availability in one of the beta versions of the Drobo firmware, but the latest stable only supports “non Linux file systems”.
Therefore, if i ever want to replace the Terastation with a Drobo (and i guess, i never will *g*), then only, if it supports at least ext3.
