The story behind the photo (1): the black cube

Saturday November 17, 2007 at 11:51PM

From now on I will write about the story, the feelings and the intentions behind my favorite shots. I will start with one my of most interesting shots.

starring into the black
starring into the black

The artist Gregor Schneider has installed a new installation in Hamburg called "Cubes, Art in the Age of
global terrorism
". It was a giant black cube which had been arranged between the buildings of the "Hamburger Kunsthalle" (Hamburg Hall of Art). The black cube had the same dimensions like the Kaaba in Mekka. Gregor Schneider had some serious trouble with his kind of art. Berlin and Venice decided not to show his giant cube to the public.

One day I had my camera with me and I was on my way to the main station. I decided to visit the cube. After I arrived I saw some people standing in front of the cube starring at it. The platform where the cube was built up looks like an unfinished pyramid with stairs to each side of it. I was standing beneath the scenery when I took this shot. My intention was to freeze this moment of silence were all the people starred into this black cube. There was no detail. Just pure blackness. The woman on the right side looks like she is miles away. But it were just a few feet. The man on the right looks so relaxed. The others could be astonished about this giant piece of art. What was really on their minds?

Nobody knows...

Nice idea. I like to read background stories on pictures.
And once again, I really like that shot and take a look on it from time to time.
