Last Night's Terror Dream

The dream begins with me in my apartment… The door is open and Donald Sutherland is standing in the doorway. In the dream, I know he is there to torture and kill me… I can see flashes of meat hooks and cutting implements… He is smiling, very congenial… We are talking and I am trying to stay calm so I don’t give away that I know he is there to hurt me. He has an accomplice in the hallway, a younger man with longish shaggy hair and sparse facial hair. He has a bunch of tools spread out on the floor in the hall. DS tells me that there is some work that needs to be done on the house, but I know that those are their torture tools, the things they will use to hurt me.

DS is still standing in the doorway, talking to me. He is all smiles and friendly, but it’s all a lie. I try my damnedest to appear calm… I’m trying to figure a way out… There are flashes of me trying to open the window in the bathroom, but I can’t get it open… Back in the living room, I am looking at my couch… I have some green apples and some other kind of fruit/gourd loosely lined up on the cushions. I think about throwing the fruit at DS, but then I think better of it.

DS leaves after a while and goes into the apartment directly across the hall from me. His accomplice is still working with the tools in the hallway. I decide to casually work my way to the front door, then make a break for it… I walk out into the hallway… as I walk past DS’s accomplice, his hand shoots out and grabs my wrist. I assure him I’m just going to look out the window in the door… he lets go and I walk up to the door. I pause to look outside… Then I fling the door open and run like mad… I’m running northward down the street when I wake up…

(When I woke up this first time, I was in a panic. My heart was pounding and I was sweating. I was really confused because I woke up in the same place I just tried to escape… Only I was really there. It took me a few to grasp that I wasn’t still in the dream… I got up, drank some water, and then tried to go back to sleep… When I finally fell back asleep…)

…I’m back in the house. It is evening and I am alone in my apartment. I am naked. Night falls and I try to think of how to escape. DS and his accomplice are living in the apartment across the hall from me. I sneak out of my apartment and into the apartment next door. Normally, there is an elderly woman who lives in it, but that night, she’s not there. The television is on and the room is filled with a soft grey light…the dream shifts a little and the elderly lady is there. I’m trying to tell her what is happening and she’s not sure if she can believe me. I am in a panic as I’m trying to convince her to let me hide in her place… as I’m shaking and spitting out explanations and pleading, I wake up…

(When I woke up I was in a panic again, heart pounding, etc… Same disoriented feeling… I stayed in bed and tried to get back to sleep… )

…I’m in the elderly lady’s apartment. The television is on, but we’re not watching it. I’m looking at little knick-knacks on her dresser… I hear the men in the hall and start to panic again… The elder lady understands now and we are both frightened… I wake up again…

(Once again, I woke up with a start. The door to my bedroom looked like it was hiding the shadow of DS and I had to shake off that feeling of dread. I was almost back to sleep when something in one of my bedroom windows expanded or contracted and made a loud springy noise, making me start awake again… After a while, I was back in sleep…)

… back in the elderly lady’s apartment… The television is still on, but we are huddled together on the fold-out couch in her living room… The door is to our left… The elderly lady has fallen asleep… I look over at the door and see that it is opening, very slowly… I look at the space forming between the edge of the door and the frame by the hinges… I can see DS’s accomplice’s eyes, looking right at me… At this point I am terrified, but I am angry… I push on the door to try to keep it closed and stare straight into his eyes… I yell… something… I’m not sure of the words, but whatever they are I am yelling them with all of my strength… My voice is multi-layered and full of gravel… as I’m yelling, I wake up again…

(At this point, I am extremely tired and fed-up… try to get back to sleep again…)

…the dream has shifted and I am in front of the house of my childhood. DS and the other guy are there. They have my boyfriend, too… We both try to escape, but only I make it… I run to an old car that is parked and running in the driveway (I can only assume that this was our “getaway car”)… I back the car out and face the entryway. DS and the guy are standing on the front porch, holding my boyfriend prisoner… I decide that the only way I can get him away from them is to ram the car into the house… I hit the gas and speed towards the house… and wake up again…

(This is the last time that I woke up before waking up to my alarm. I have no idea how everything ended… I vaguely remember my boyfriend and I running away, but it’s pretty cloudy…)

I feel very, very tired today…

Friday Fun: How Mal Became a Space Ranger... a Hammie-tale

Once upon a time, there was a hamster named Mal. He had a keen eye and an adventurous spirit… and he liked shiny things… Oh how he loved the shiny…

One evening, as he was walking over to his wheel, Mal glanced up into the sky and saw a bright and shining star.

Mal spies with his little eye... something shiny!
Mal spies with his little eye.…

"Ooo… Shiny. I want that," Mal thought.

So, Mal tried to think of ways to get to the star…

He thought maybe if he grinned at the star long enough, the star would come to him:

"Hey! What's up?" : )
"Hey! What's up?" : )

Unfortunately, the star wasn’t interested in grins…

Mal tried asking low-flying aliens if they could give him a ride:

Mal, about to be abducted by aliens...?
Mal, about to be abducted by a…

"Can a hammie get a lift?"

But they were only interested in abductions. If the hamster wasn’t asleep or drunk, well… It just wasn’t worth it. (Luckily, our hammie-hero doesn’t drink and is nocturnal.)

Finally, Mal realized he needed help. He went to see the Great and Powerful Space Duck:

"Help me, Space Duck... You're my only hope..."
"Help me, Space Duck... You're…

"Great and powerful Space Duck! I am but a humble hamster with a dream… A shiny, shiny dream… Will you help a hammie get his star?"

Space Duck was an alright kind of duck and decided to help Mal.

"The key," Space Duck said...

Space Duck!
Space Duck!

"...is broccoli... and a spaceship."

Mal was elated. "I knew it!" he cried.

"And you shall be known as Space Ranger Mal!" Space Duck proclaimed with great fanfare.

"Ok.... I'll be in the produce aisle," said Mal.

So, while Space Duck went to work fashioning a spaceship for the hamster, Mal began shoveling all of the broccoli he could find into his cheek pouches.

Just when Mal thought he couldn't stuff in any more broccoli, he hit critical mass.

Mal, upon reaching critical mass
Mal, upon reaching critical ma…

He jumped in the pink (pink?!) spaceship Space Duck had made for him and he was off!

Happy Space Ranger Mal
Happy Space Ranger Mal

Mal, overjoyed, flew straight to the shiny star, plucked it from the sky and brought it back home to Earth. The re-entrance into Earth's atmosphere baked the star to a golden brown... and it was delicious...

And that, friends, is the completely true and accurate story of how Mal became Space Ranger Mal. : )

Have a great weekend! : )

Hamster Ball Question...?

Hey guys,

Have any of you heard of a ball being bad for a hamster, in general? I mean, I know you should have a large enough ball and not let them fall down stairs or get kicked around, etc… But just being in a ball in general? I don’t think it’s bad for a hamster. Mal seems to like being able to explore my apartment on his own. If he’s not into rolling, he just sits in the ball and grooms himself (my signal to take him out)… and when he’s rolling, I keep an eye on him and don’t let him get stuck anywhere or stay in for too long.

I have a video of Mal running in his ball uploaded to youtube and I have recently received comments from a person who is telling me that running in a ball is bad and painful for a hamster (he’s also calling me nasty names, but I’ll keep this civil).

Does this guy have a point, or is he just being a jerk?

I’m just curious about what other people think of this.

Thanks!!!

In need of prayers and good thoughts...

As some of you know, we had an ice storm here in the Midwest. There are lots of people without electricity right now. Fortunately, I am not one of them.

Unfortunately, my boyfriend and his parents are. Their power has been out since Monday and the power company said it might be as many as 10 days before it’s back on.

If it’s not too much to ask, please keep all of the people without power in your thoughts and prayers. They are managing as best they can, but it’s a depressing situation and they can use all the good thoughts they can get.

Thanks!

I have sound!!!

Whoo! So, I finally got the Delta to work... It involved uninstalling, removing PCI cards, changing the PCI slot I was plugging the Delta into, reinstalling, etc... But it works!

Now, I just need to get Cubase up and running. I installed it, but everytime I try to open it, I get an error message telling me a file is missing. I did have a little wierdness when installing, so I may need to reformat and try again, but I think I'll get that figured out a lot faster than I did the Delta.

Thank you so much to all the people who gave advice and offered help! HG, D, and KSG, I'm looking at you! You guys rock! : )

Let the reformatting begin...

So, I still can't get the computer to talk to the audio card... Why? They seem like they'd be great friends... They both like unicorns and everything.

So, I'm going to reformat and see if I can try to install this thing one more time...

Tubas! Now, with video!

So, the building I work in hosted a tuba choir on Friday, Dec 7th. It was Tuba Christmas and it was pretty darn cool. I uploaded the only video I managed to snag on my digi-cam to youtube. It's not the best quality and the acoustics weren't great up on the third floor where I was, HOWEVER... it's worth watching for the conductor at the end. He's a spunky fellow. : )

Arg!

Ok. Got the new computer. Installed my M-Audio Delta so I can hook up my Omni i/o Audio Station. Had HUGE trouble getting the drivers installed, kept getting an error: "Code 10". WTF? Finally got my computer to recognize it tonight. Whew. So, installed Cubase. Trying to select the Delta and I get this error: "C". Just "C".

Arg!

I can't wrestle with this anymore tonight or I will explode. The grammar glob of my brain has already 'sploded. Me tired. Me so very tired...

Only one thing can make me feel better:

My favorite Fark tag from today

Those of you who don't know the goodness of Fark should check it out: www.fark.com.

My favorite tag from today:

"Sarkozy goes to China, secures $30 billion in nuclear and aerospace contracts, pushes deregulation of the yuan, urges less death penalty and release of political prisoners. In related news, Bush got a whole turkey leg, but couldn't finish it."
