In my photo bag

In My Bag
In My Bag

Some of my flickr friends know this already, I'd like to share a little about what is in my photo bag.

I like to be mobile and still want to carry all my photo equipment with me all the time. That is why I love my Lowepro Nova 3 AW bag. It is very compact and I can access all my gear hands free without having to take it off.

As for the lenses I'd love to be all prime but instead I chose a mix of primes and zooms what to me is the optimum tradeoff in value for money, quality, mobility and flexibility. So here is what I use:

Canon EOS 5D
Leica D-Lux 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM
Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod
Manfrotto 484RC2 ballhead
16GB of CF cards (different makes of 4/2/1 GB)
Canon BP511-A battery pack (3x)
Lowepro Nova 3 AW bag

I had a Canon EOS 350D before the 5D, some photos of that can be seen here too.

super!

I am not a pro in terms of that I do not earn my living with photography. Nonetheless I have high expectations to myself when it comes to photography. ;-)

You should be very committed to photography to take always all this stuff with you :-D

(Just trying to pretend that I don't know how committed you are :-D)

I do appreciate the way you are showing all your gear in your bag. Interesting thopic!
I will be flying to Mexico in few weeks and I need to take my tripod with me, I have my Cullman. Gorgeous tripot, very sturdy, but a bit too big, specially when I have to take three planes to arrive to my sister's home, so I was thinking about a Manfrotto tripod.
How is it with the one you have? I am only planning to take landscapes, so I will just use a wide angle lens. Is this tripod sturdy enough for the 5D?
I also have a lowepro micro trekker 200, and I would love just to perch in my bag without any hassle...
BTW, would you share infor about where you bought it??
Thanks a lot... :)

Ulrich pro replies:
Thank you, Irma. As for the tripod, I find it sturdy enough for anything up to the 5D with 70-200 f/4 L attached, so it should be ok for your wide angle too. You do have a heavier telephoto lens if I remember correctly and think that at least you would need another ballhead for this while the tripod should still do.

The tripod I bought at a local photo shop in Frankfurt, Photo Besier. But I do buy at www.pixxass.de as well, camera and most of my lenses for instance. I think I bought the bag at Media Markt, they had a special offer at that time.

Thanks a lot for your info!
I'll get me one of those then.

Most of the times I use my 100-400mm with a monopod. It is easy to carry along with the lens, and helps a lot with the weight.

Have a nice afternoon... :)

Photomtion: do you have any ingenius way of attaching your tripod to your bag? I have a Manfrotto 190 and a Nova 1 for my digital, and a Nova 4 for my film kit, but so far I am still carrying the tripod on a strap over my shoulder. Any ideas?

Ulrich pro replies:
I carry the tripod on a strap over my shoulder too and actually am quite happy with this way of transportation (will post an example photo later). When attached to the bag the tripod would dangle around too much during walks and the weight is not well balanced too...

Thanks for sharing, very interesting. I've just got myself a Lowepro Nova 1 which I'm really happy with; great design and ease of use.

Do you have a special strap for the tripod too? I find the Nova 1 strap to be excellent (padding and shape) as it doesn't cut into my shoulder - warmer climate here so I usually don't have the protection of extra layers!

Ulrich pro replies:
I use a comparably small strap that originally came with a Lowepro belt pouch. As I do not use the strap on the belt pouch, I recycled it as my tripod strap :-) A little part of it can be seen on the first photo above (hanging down in front), nothing special, but it does not cut into the shoulder either, at least no trouble with that so far.

I am back to pick your brains a bit, if I may. :-)

I've bought a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM lens and used it for the first time yesterday. I'm flying to the Baltics on Friday and am working out what to take with me. My other lens is a Canon EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM which fits perfectly in my Lowpro bag with its accessories and is what I'm used to carrying around. The f/4 doesn't fit in the bag so I'd have to carry it in my handbag (which is large enough) as I can't get a larger case in time.

Logistics aside, I'd appreciate your input as to whether you think the f/4 is suited to general sightseeing shots in the hands of an amateur in this context or whether it is better sticking to the devil I know.

PS - I find the tags on your photos very informative, added to the EXIF data you share it is very useful to learn from, thank you.
