Glueck gehabt - mal wieder ...

Once again, we were very lucky ...

I first saw it on the news this evening, and immediately called a neighbor in Florida. Sunday night, an F2 tornado had hit the city where we usually live, and destroyed about 150 homes. Our place is ok, but the tornado hit very close to where our former house is. I have no idea how it looks like today ... I am still shocked.

Ich hab's erst zufaellig in den Nachrichten heute Abend gesehen: Am Sonntag Abend hat ein Tornado in Florida ca. 150 Haeuser beschaedigt, in der Stadt, wo wir sonst leben. Ich habe sofort eine Nachbarin angerufen, und zum Glueck ist bei uns alles ok. Aber der Tornado kam genau da runter, wo unser altes Haus steht. Ich habe keine Ahnung, wie es da im Moment aussieht ... mir ist noch ganz mulmig.

Ja, das kann man sich kaum vorstellen, nicht wahr? Ich hab mir gestern alle Fotos in der Online-Ausgabe der oertlichen Zeitung angesehen. Da liegt ein LKW auf der Seite auf einem Parkplatz, genau da wo ich frueher meine Eulen fotografiert habe. Jetzt ist da ein WalMart - nur ein paar Schritte von unserem alten Haus ....

Wenn du die Adresse wuesstest, koennte ich dir sagen, ob sie in der Naehe waren. Die Stadt ist ja vom Gelaende her riesig gross.

Unsere neue Wohnung ist nur 10 Autominuten vom alten Haus, und da war noch nicht mal der Strom weg. Der Tornado war ja nur 50 Meter breit. Anders als bei einem Hurrikan siehst du dann Haeuser, die total zerstoert sind neben anderen, die ueberhaupt nichts abbekommen haben ...

Ich weiss noch, wie schlimm das bei Hurrikan Charley war - und damals haben wir uns drauf vorbereiten koennen. Das hier kam aus heiterem Himmel ...

Aber ihr habt lange genug jedes Jahr gezittert, dass die Unwetter euch verschonen mögen.
Ich sehe noch die Bilder vor mir, wie der Wasserpegel in eurem Pool stieg und stieg.. Und wir alle sehr erleichtert waren, als das Wasser kurz vor der Eskalation stoppte. Ständig vor irgend etwas Angst haben zu müssen, kann's ja auch nicht sein- Urlaubsparadies hin oder her.. Ein Glück, dass ihr so flexibel seid.. Da ist unsereiner in good old Europe doch viel unbeweglicher -um mal von MIR zu sprechen- ich klebe doch ziemlich fest an meiner Scholle.. ;-))

Das mit dem Pegel war zwar nicht im Pool, sondern im Kanal, aber es war schon sehr aufregend damals ...

Und ja, flexibel zu sein hat was fuer sich: Wenn wir unsere Nachbarn nicht mehr moegen, packen wir einfach unseren Kram zusammen und ziehen um! ;-)))

Seriously, it's an awful thing, but WEATHER, as you personally know all too well, is one of those Florida realities. I'm so glad you and your place is okay. It sure gives your heart a flutter when you recognize places of destruction as places you have frequented. I had that experience after every major earthquake in California... still do, in fact, when I see it on the news.

Right - I cannot imagine what an earthquake would be like. I think that would be the worst of all catastrophes. But then again, *everything* that effects us in that way is terrible ...

I guess it depends on what you're used to. The thing about earthquakes compared to hurricanes (or living in California compared to Georgia) is that earthquakes come without warning -- WHAM! It either gets you or it doesn't and it's over in a couple of minutes. Hurricanes keep you worried for days, maybe weeks, that it's going to hit you, then WHAM! it takes a turn and hits somewhere else. For me, earthquakes were easier to deal with.

To me it gets easier when I can prepare. An earthquake would hit me out of the blue, but with a hurricane I can stock up on supplies and seek shelter - most of the times, at least. A tornado scares me a lot more, because there's not even enough time to roll down the shutters!
