Crash!!!!!update

Monday November 3rd, 2008 at 12:33AM

My computer has crashed, so I will be off line for a while :(

hopefully I can recover the thousands of photos on the harddrive.

Well, its not as bad as it firste seemed.

I have a lot of older stuff backed up on CD, and the most recent stuff I recovered from my cameras memory sticks.

It seems that thousands of photos are still on my crashed computers hardisk and I'm assured that for a price I can get them back.....

So I continuie uploading :)

Good luck with the recovery. It would be a real shame if those photos could not be recovered, a real real shame.

Hi jake, buy a cheap IDE-USB adapter (here: 20 Euro), plug it to another PC and read in your old harddisk with a linux live-CD which does *not* stop on errors (read raw, uses the dd command) - normally you can get everything back except the pictures on a real defective track.

I booted the machine from disk and with DOS was able to see that one harddrive is intact. The other harddisk is partitioned and neither partition can be read..... will your suggestion still work?
Is linux live-CD downloadable?
I used a german piece of software, PC Inspector, and it worked great to recover deleted files from my camera's media..... would it work with a "slave computer" through the IDE USB?

I think DOS is not very useful - it cannot read ntfs particions

Try:

www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix

www.debianadmin.com/recover-data-from-a-dead-hard-drive-using-ddrescue.html

blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=3214

I would *not* use PC Inspector (or any other recovery program) on the original
disk - they write on the disk and eventually everything is really broken.

Oh damn... although it don't seems so bad it's a terrible work to recover all. I wish you good luck and power. It would be very bad if you couldn't save the beautiful pix again. So try your best, hehe...

Bad news!
In addition to ghoermann's comments, you could also try knoppix, which is a live-cd of linux I've heard people use for diagnostics.
Good luck!

Good luck! I use a portable drive (250 GB) as a general backup, and also flickr as backup for ipernity. One shouldn't fill up a harddisk above 50, better 35 % capacity, and regularly run cleandisk and difragment utilities.. and keep data away from the programs..sofar I have avoided crashes that way!
Most harddisks can be recovered with some effort. I hope the best for you!
