More translation

Monday May 26, 2008 at 07:38PM

I've spent quite some time trying to translate ipernity into Swedish and it's an interesting experience. I've translated stuff from English to Swedish and vice versa, I'm not in any way trying to say that I'm a real translator but I've translated interviews, papers etc.

However, translating something like ipernity is different. When I translate a paper I can put the text I'm translating into context, I can see what is written both before and after the actual text I'm translating. This makes it possible to "re-word" the text so it looks OK in the other language. In other words I'm not doing a "word-for-word" translation. But when I translate ipernity I only see snippets of text without context which makes it fairly difficult to find the correct "tone" and choice of words + I need to make sure that the text doesn't look too "nerdy" but it can't be too "non-geeky" either.

It's going to be interesting to see the result, I suspect that I need to take a second pass over the pages and make sure things doesn't look too strange.
