  • a this and that day and a surprise.

    - 24 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
Today was cold but dry so I got a little stroll in this morning, not what you could call a hike it is far too cold for that but it got the heart pumping. I had no plans for today and I have been pottering about doing the odd chores that get left too long, you know the ones you don't like doing but in the end you have to.Today it was a good bottoming on the work surfaces and cupboards in the kitchen, that kept me out of mischief for a couple of hours. That was about the sum total of my work toda…

  • My calendar doesn't keep the correct time

    - 23 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
I posted the latest Photo Phun entry today only to be told by John my calendar was fast and indeed the photo should not be posted until tomorrow.I blame Sue and Neville as they sent me the calendar, maybe Ireland doesn't have a 23rd November this year I must check. The rain and wind relented today and I managed to escape for a short stroll this afternoon. The wind was biting at my nose and ears but at least I stretched the old legs. I am all cozy now with some fridge soup simmering awa…

  • Well this rain is welcome to some

    - 22 Nov 2012 - 3 comments
I have sat watching very heavy rain today, parts of my garden that doesn't flood did and two streets away the road was flooded and well as the promenade. Still it's an ill wind and all that, these two fellas had a great time splashing around. More rain forecast for tomorrow I am starting to get cabin fever and need to make a break for it soon rain or not. Off for a shower and then it will be my number one mug full of chicken soup just the thing for a cold wet night.

  • The humble postie

    - 22 Nov 2012 - 3 comments
This year has to have been the wettest on record, certainly it is the wettest I can remember. The impact on industry has been huge. The building trade have laid off men in their thousands and the farmers have taken a battering. One group of people have carried on through all the wind and rain, the humble posties. The man who delivers on this round has just dropped a small package off for me and the term drowned rat comes to mind. He is dripping from head to foot as he has been many time…

  • So what is a working men's club? Sorry I thought you asked

    - 21 Nov 2012 - 1 comment
I wrote a short piece this morning about an old snooker player. He brought back memories of the working men's clubs where I used to play snooker, very badly I might add but I scraped into the team. I thought I would give a short description of a working man's club for those not from these shores The clubs were men only back in the day ( I had to put that in for Sue) as far as the games rooms were concerned. The games room was where it all happened with snooker, darts, cards and dominoes going…

  • Memories of smokey snooker halls

    - 21 Nov 2012 - 1 comment
I was setting my desktop computer up for watching sport this morning when I spotted a snooker match with Jimmy White playing. Jimmy burst onto the scene in the late 60s early 70s when I was a very average player for my local working men's club. Jimmy was a class act and folk who know say he was the best player never to win the world title. This morning it was a little sad to see Jimmy playing a match in an empty arena trying to qualify for the UK championships. He is a little thicker around the…

    - 20 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
We have the promised rain this morning 60cm by tomorrow they tell us so I will be in all day, On a brighter note the Photo phun subject for today today is insects. Well the garden birds are fed and watered time for me to do the same. Have fun and keep your powder dry

  • Newer is not always better

    - 19 Nov 2012 - 5 comments
I have my desktop computer sorted to my liking again. Newer does not always mean better and a couple of the photo fixers I used give much better results in the earlier versions which will not work on Windows 7 so I have installed them on here. Normally of course both computers would not be running but I am giving the old beast I thorough disc check now everything is up and running again. So I now have a twin work station ,it made much more sense than putting the big machine upstairs, afte…

  • Back on the steam driven desktop

    - 19 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
I have the old desktop computer going again,my computer man came and sorted it this morning. It is a slow as treacle on a winters day compared with the laptop but as it is only a back up that doesn't matter. It's running XP as well and in a short time I had forgotten the changes from it to 7 but it soon came back. I am on a test drive at the moment uploading programmes and up dating things,it's a good day to be messing because it is raining and windy here, no place for a walk even for an old gr…

  • I like modern life

    - 18 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
I wrote yesterday about things I miss but this is not to say I do not enjoy modern life. I like waking up in a warm bedroom, gone are the days of sticking my nose out of bed to be met with an icy blast and having to prepare myself for the arctic chill in and even colder bathroom. I like coming on here after brekkie and catching up on e mails from friends, seeing instant photos of their latest adventure or family snaps. I like clicking on this site to see what you lot have been up to and rea…

  • A self portrait for Photo Phun

    - 18 Nov 2012 - 1 comment
Today's subject is a portrait so I am posting a self portrait of sorts. I was 9 or 10 years old when my parents got me of a second hand camera. I thought I should mark the occasion by holding it at arms length and snapping a shot of myself. I needed longer arms

  • Things I miss

    - 17 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
Things I miss. Apart from loved ones Waking to Barmy greeting the day by singing his heart out. The clink of bottles as the milkman delivered proper milk with cream on the top. The early morning radio announcer speaking softly and playing soft music to ease me into the day. The sound of the letter box flapping around breakfast time instead of lunch time as it does now. The Times Crossword at breakfast when newspapers were newspapers and delivered early. The chatter of neighbours on a M…

  • I'm back again

    - 16 Nov 2012 - 2 comments
Just when you thought it was safe to come back here I am large as life and twice as ugly. If you read the earlier garbage you will know the day was going well. It has ended on an even better note. I have the door shortened, refitted and put the anti draught brush on. Now I am as snug as a bug in a rug. I have my computer man coming Monday to sort a hitch on my desktop machine, there will be no charge as it is under 12 months since he banished the virus and fitted a new hard drive. I don't use i…

I had a letter in the post this morning telling me I need to renew my NOW card. This card allows me free bus travel on local bus routes nation wide. When I last renewed this it was a pain, getting a passport photo at the post office machine because they did not accept photos printed off computers and a long wait in a queue to hand the form and photos in at the town hall.As the powers that be gave everybody local a two day slot to do this you can imagine the mayhem and throwing of toys out of prams…

The subject for today's photo is a tree nearest your house,Well I just have to open my back door and take a shot.My neighbour John has this one growing,it is bare at the moment but provides good cover for the birds come nesting season.

  • a quiet lazy day

    - 15 Nov 2012 - 3 comments
The plan today was to go over the bridge and find a hearth rug just to set the finishing touch to the room. I am after something bright and cheery and maybe a little weird, well weird suits me. I decided instead to have a day of doing bugger all after the last two days graft. I pottered around this morning doing the necessary before I had the urge for an egg and bacon flan so set too and baked one for lunch and having pastry let over I knocked 5 jam tarts together as well. With a lamb stew…

  • Carpet done, ish

    - 14 Nov 2012 - 4 comments
Well after a few loosening exercises and a nice stroll this morning(see earlier blog) I came home put the big frying pan on the hob. I had sausage, bacon, tomatoes, egg and fried bread washed down with two mugs of coffee and boy did it hit the spot. The exercises and walk took the aches away and the breakfast put some life back into me. My back is in good order after yesterdays tantrum and the legs fit to run a marathon. I think most of the aftermath of yesterday was because I have hardly got any l…
