German VS Chinese

Monday July 7, 2008 at 04:04AM

An old post from a Chinese artist Liu Yang. Still funny to read:

German culture VS Chinese culture

(and yes, blue is German & red is Chinese)

opinion

Lifestyle

punctuality

social network

Way to show anger

queuing

Sunday streets

in restaurants

traveling

three meals

old people's daily life

imagine each other

Quite true except for Lifestyle.

We say westerners are individualistic.
But I now believe that Chinese are much more individualistic than german who like to meet in big party and party together.

And punctuality.
German and Chinese are very always on time (comparing with French)

Does joining parties necessarily mean one can be less individualistic?

Sylvain R. replies:
I think they are less individualistic in a way that they care more about others than in China.
Chinese can really do anything and be so friendly if you are a friend or part of the "network" guanxi.
But many will not care about a ambulance (Many time not making space for the ambulance to drive, whatever one might be dying inside if ambulance loose time) or people on the street that they do not know.
So, in my point of view, chinese are more individualistic... individualistic is maybe not exactly the good word... but...

Punctuality and queuing...wrong for Southern Germany ;-) And some of the others are slightly incorrect from a Southern German viewpoint as well (it's closer to France or Northern Italy)...I guess they took an average for all of Germany :-)

Michellepro replies:
haha, yes. And the Chinese here only refer to the general image. There are huge differences between ppl from South & North. :)

I can imagine, Michelle, especially since China is quite a bit larger than Germany! :-))
Unfortunately, I haven't seen much of China yet, just been to Hong Kong and Macau and that was a looooong time ago.
