I moved here from Flickr (Yahoo) because i'm sick and tired of their filtering and censorship policies

i'm afraid that now that it will be hard for ipernity to compete with flickr, now that flickr is localized in european l

the only way for ipernity to compete with flickr are a few innovative features (missing from flickr), and the fact they they don't censor harmless nudity (which is censored by flickr with their filters etc).

but will that be enough for ipernity to attract masses?

ipernity is good, but honnestly, it is still very far from competing with flickr on the technical point of view (i.e. features, ease of use, powerful tools, external API and so many third-party tools etc).

There's a few things about ipernity that I REALLY like that could possibly push flickr off my plate if they continue to piss me off. But one thing that most definitely can't be beat (at the moment) is the sheer number of people to network with.

Plus at the moment, th "feel" of this place is a lot like old skool flickr, which I really appreciate. :) Flickr tries to be "aw shucks" granola old hippie AND a slick corporate man at the same time... It just doesn't work :)

Anyway I'm digressing now. Nice to see you here. :)

I am not sure if I really want them to become as big as flickr. Have a look at www.fotola.com/berylium. They never got big and therefore still are the nice cozy place they used to be 3 years ago. My personal lesson from watching several services grow is: it's not good when they become too big because then it's only about big business and no longer about the user. So a moderate size which would still pay the bills and some extra money would be ideal, IMHO.

Fred (also on http://flickr.com/freeed) replies:
I agree with you; yet, they have to pay their bills somehow. So growing to a decent size of paying customers is the only way for them to survive.

However, if they keep pushing the translation efforts, they might be successful. For now, ipernity appeals to me for example because they are European-based and seem to try much (!) harder than flickr to understand how the people think like over here.

After all, they don't need to become as big as flickr to be able to pay their bills.

I don´t miss something here except the group-function wich comes in about 2-3 weeks. Ipernity is even moren than just a photo-platform. Just think about the blog-function we are using at this moment!

yep, the blog part of ipernity is nice, definitely. it's something missing from flickr.

BTW what does the name "IPERNITY" stand for? i don't think it's a name too good, and not easy to remember.

Thus was born Ipernity (a contraction of "IP" for internet protocol, and "eternity" for the duration) ...

to add: an API is available, just not documented and complete yet. First third party apps exist...

I agree with rob_visual: the group function is an essential feature that has been lacking here so far.

There is a certain danger that this place will be forever only an exile for some flickr refugees. At the moment the growing rate is decreasing daily. But still people are very enthusiastic, much more than realistic...

I agree with you. There are things I really miss on ipernity and flickr is definitively better in technical aspects. Ipernety should think of a few unique features - and they should do it fast. And groups. Groups is a must have...

I also come from Flickr (old school and all) and at first, I wasnt sure, but the more I use Ipernity the more I like it, I now even like it more then Flickr. I just hope that one day, not another big corp will come along and buy/bugger this site up ...

It takes more then some translation to localise a site, and I think Flickr kinda missed the point on that ... (personaly, I prefer if Ipernity didn't go down that route, as I feel it did split up a larger comunity in smaller fractions, but that is just me :))

I would rather they not compete, and I would rather that they don't get a flood of flickr rebels over night. I like this as an alternative. I agree with Trientje, and I HOPE they don't sell out to a big company. I never did like Yahoo much.
