Elina Brotherus, Decisive Days

Thursday August 23, 2007 at 06:22AM

I've been going through a collection (named Decisive Days) of works of finnish photographer Elina Brotherus from years 1997-2001. Her works fascinate me: introspective, emotional, self-documentary and often sad self-portraits, pictures of open and abandoned places, vast horizons... Deep emotions contrasted with horizons that open spaces to breathe freely. Her style is minimalistic and melancholic which I love because I'm a bit melancholical girl myself!

More information about Elina Brotherus can be found for example here: www.arsfennica.fi/2007/brotherus-en.html

Some of her works can be seen for example here: www.sag.se/foto/elinabrotherus/elina.html

i'm sometimes melancholic too... some of their pics i really like. i also like the softness coming through - but some pics are disturbing. maybe it's to early for me to watch them right now... so, i'll come back later to have another look

Yes, "disturbing" is a word that describes my feelings too, although I'm not sure if that word gets the same content with your experience as it gets with mine. I guess that one aim or meaning of those pictures is to disturb, to awaken those difficult and dark sides that are part of everyone's experiences in the person seeing them and to make them known to that person so that those emotions can become under scrutiny and reflection. Those pics are definately not easy to live through. I too wouldn't propably want to see them first thing in the morning! :)

thanks for the links kipin! I like her work a lot (perhaps not surprisingly), there's a loneliness in them that are appealing, yet I can see that it can also be seen as disturbing... but yes, those feelings are important too, one cannot ignore but should explore... :)

Thanks for sharing your opinion Annjin. After seeing some of your pictures it really isn't hard to imagine that you enjoy works of Brotherus, there's something similar in your and her works, mood perhaps.
