My first Photojournalism Article!

www.demotix.com/news/g20-protest-london

I am really proud of my little Nikon D40x D.SLR. When i was in the press pit with all the big boys and they're big toys, i felt, ...let's say...Inadequate!!! But my camera proved it's a match for any of their Mothers. A great day and a really memorable experience bieng on the stage in front of 40'000 people.

Lucky Escape! ( my equipment wasn't damaged!!! thank goodness)

Smoke alarm saved my life, says woman

by Peter Barnett

A Margate resident has praised Kent Fire and Rescue Service for fitting a smoke alarm that saved her life.

Kim Conway escaped shaken but unhurt from a serious fire in her home after the alarm – recently fitted by Margate firefighters – alerted her to the blaze caused by a chip pan.

Thanet and Margate crews were called to the Grosvenor Place flat at 3.25pm on Wednesday (Feb 25) to deal with the kitchen fire. The smoke alarm had sounded and allowed Kim - who had fallen asleep - precious minutes to vacate her home. Luckily she had closed the door to her kitchen, which prevented the fire from spreading beyond the kitchen itself.

She said: “Before Christmas I saw Margate firefighters in the town centre promoting home safety visits and the fitting of free smoke alarms. I arranged an appointment and they came to the house and fitted the alarm – and it has literally just saved my life. I cannot thank Kent Fire and Rescue Service enough and would advise everyone to take up their offer and have these small devices fitted in their homes – they are absolutely invaluable.”

The smoke alarm was fitted as part of Kent Fire and Rescue Service’s free home safety service, a 30 minute visit during which firefighters give invaluable safety advice and fit, where necessary, smoke alarms free of charge.

Watch Manager Steve Flint was in charge of the incident. He said: “There is no doubt this smoke alarm saved Kim’s life because it gave her the chance to escape the property, call us and stay out until we had dealt with the fire.

"Had it not have alerted her to the fire the outcome may have been very different. We cannot impress upon people enough that it is vital, as this incident has shown, that you fit and maintain smoke alarms to protect you and your family from the threat of fire.”

Glastonbury 2008

Well having been living in the glastonbury woodlands for well over 3 weeks and living and working with the bristol permaculture assc. helping to build an eco village, it's been a tad difficult to get on line! But now i am back ( alas) and here are some photos documenting my experience. I had an amazing time, met some amazing people and put into practice some skills to create an amazing, low impact eco village, for the festival. For sure my life is changed!! Hope you enjoy and gain some inspiration from the photos.

DREAMLAND

Being brought up in a typical seaside town, i was lucky to live where the circus hid.

I used to wonder where the circus went to untill they returned the next year; The mythical elephants graveyard.

In Dreamland the circus never leaves,  life is a fairground.

Laws of The Universe

It is probable that the harmony of the Universe is achieved by a tentative balance with equal amounts of propulsion and expulsion:Magnatism and expulsion: Anti matter and gravitational pull;

Friction being the cause of the sun and all matter under and around, above and parallel to one another, the subjects of such laws.

LOVE is a primordial source affecting not only the human species but all of the creative forces enabling birth and growth to flourish.

Decomposition, decay and antimatter are subsidary entities, discarded and rejected by the primordial energy.

Human beings rank fairly low down on the scale of the growing and sprouting excistance-hence we do not compete with flora and fauna and our decay takes only a matter of decades to begin.

I believe there is order to every occurance and that all things have thus a reason. I debunk the idea of random events within the universe and thus it is possible that universal energy is limited and subject to a force, gentle and strong and INTELLIGENT.

Unrequitted Love

Sometimes  relationships are not as easy as we would like them to be...For example, imagine going out and your partner very rarely taking notice of you. Every beautiful being that passes by is noticed but i stay, lonely and forgotten, whilst my love is celebrating love and life and seldom looks my way. Even when the object of my desire IS focasing on me, i can't handle it!. I really do have a love / hate relationship with my camera.

Free Tibet!

After a day in the Kent countyside at an ecology centre learning how to build a house from Straw bales! (see pic) i fully intended to take the next day at a leisually pace untill i was listening to the local radio station and they announced a "free Tibet" demonstration was taking place in 45 mins in Canterbury city centre, which is 27 miles from where i live! so i hot footed it down there and spent a lovely couple of hours chanting and taking photos. A group of Chinese demonstraters turned up and started heckling us but were told by the police to shut up! (a bit of Karma there as there is no free speach in Tibet) The chinese even had the nerve to ask us to "please stop the violence in tibet as we love Tibet" (?) I bet you do mate. Still, i met some lovely people and enjoyed it emensly. Hope you like the new photos. And i hope you have a great week!

HI all!

Well these are my first photos on this great site! I hope you find them interesting; They are all from the area where i live and depict the diverse and iconic sights i grew up around. Some things never change and this is true of Margate, and after 20 yrs on the road, i come back and Jesus still looks pissed off! (or on drugs) I find this an incredible statue as it is the main statue to grace( ? ) the head Building of the church of england, you would have thought they could have come up with something a little more compassionate looking, but in one way i feel it tells the truth, Like "What the f*** is going on?" Graffitti, Trash and Beautifull wino women, we've got it all.
