Another one on its way to me :-)

Wednesday March 11, 2009 at 02:13PM

Since a couple of months, I'm using a Pentax Takumar 35/3,5 and a Carl Zeiss Sonnar 135/3,5 lens on my 30D. And I love them

Now another one is on its way to me, a (suppposedly) "near mint" Pentax SMC Takumar 200mm f/4. In M42 mount, so I can easily use it on my Canon EOS, with the AF-confirm adapter.

If the quality is comparable to the Sonnar 135, I am a very happy person

Pictures should come up in about a week ... I don't expect to have it before the weekend.

Edit: it arrived My first impression is that I rate the Sonnar 135 a bit higher, but that it is a very nice lens!

I have a Super Takumar 135/3.5 and, while colour and CA are quite good, out of focus rendition is not anywhere near Zeiss Jena lenses, I am afraid.

Yes, I am afraid that nothing beats the out of focus imaging qualities of the Sonnar lenses. However, I looked at some pictures on pbase and Flickr, made with the 200/4 and they were decent. But not the creamy bokeh that my Sonnar 135 can produce indeed.

Unfortunately the CZJ Sonnar tele primes have become very expensive :-(

I got a Jupiter-37A for 25€ (the Soviet clone of a CZJ 135/3.5) and is a happy person, CZJ:s are quite expensive nowadays. Did get a near mint-ish Hoya (!) branded 200/3.5 (also M42) that's a bit out of alignment now that I've dismantled it and cleaned some light fungus. A shame as it can perform much better. Must take a look at it again. Lastly a Pentacon 135/2.8 isn't too shabby I find, a bit larger and heavier than a 135/3.5 though (55mm filter size).
