For all the african music lovers here the video from Xuman's song "Joal". I really love that track! By the way that song was getting released on a DVD/CD compilation "Les rappeur chantent Senghor" a tribute to the poet Leopold S. Senghor last year. Some photos from my recent joal trip will follow soon. Enjoy the video and have a lovely day!!!

In Senegal all rappers have a dream. Whether that dream lives in the spiritual, political or material realm, they all seek success and fame in these realms. But can this dream be achieved in Senegal - a country where the recourses are vastly limited and thousands of youth die every year trying to flee to Europe in small boats? Episode 6 - "The African Dream" addresses this question, and the desire for rappers in Senegal to export their music and live abroad. Featuring an interview (and freestyle) with legend Didier Awadi (of Positive Black Soul fame) and the track "Fresh Time Pt 1" by Zoo Squad off the album African Underground: Depths of Dakar. some people said europeans like to go to africa to make them feel useful or to get an adventure or for profiting of other cultures or maybe just for making money. well i meet a lot of interesting europeans in dakar, but also some really scary ones. people who got some good intentions for helping, but finally doing the contrary because of not knowing enough about the culture. it's difficult to understand the senegalese society, because it's all a good show just showing the smiling face. but unfortunatly if you look deeper you find a lot of jeaulousy and racism. it's been soon 10 years i have been coming regularly to senegal, but still i am learning a lot everyday. communication is the biggest problem in terms of language, culture, education and religion. i was doing a lot of mistakes without even knowing. but still the most important thing for me is to show respect and also to get respected. i try my best to get adapted here, but where is the limit of not loosing your own culture and your principles??? for example i think i am working too german in senegal and actually no one else cares about the job is well done or right on time. there are things in life you can only learn by travelling and maybe it is also a kind of adventure like life is. some people are maybe just serching for a little spice in their life...
Democracy in Dakar, Episode 4 - "Wade Wins". This episode shows the calm after the storm. A very eerie calm indeed as all of Dakar seems stunned by the election results, where Wade has seemed to have won 56% of the vote. This episode shows the calm on the streets and some incisive interviews with journalists and artists. Gaston bring their appropriate and haunting track "Wallo" to this episode, as well as participate in a deep interview. Also featured are interviews with Keyti, Rose Skelton, Serigne Ndiaye, Pape Guey and Matador. African Underground: Democracy in Dakar Episode # 4

the day of the elections with the underground group sen kumpë from medina. i am pretty much impressed about these guys, cos they are always positive thinking in whatever bad situation they might be. sometimes i forget about how hard life is for other people, because i am so much busy with my own problems. but when i see people like sen kumpë that really gives me hope, that i can also get what i want if i am strongly believing in it. they just signed a deal with nike and i am sure that people from abroad gonna soon talk more about them. life is a struggle, but one day you gonna get what you deserve, inchallah.
like i promised here is the second episode of democracy in dakar. in this one there are 3 of my favourite senegalese rappers keyti, xuman and witness from wagëblë talking about hip hop, the freedom of speech and the hopeless political situation in senegal. this year there were 15 candidats running for elections and finally abdoulaye wade was winning in the first round with 56%. for many senegalese was that result a big surprising and people wonder if there is still democracy in dakar since senegal is known for having the longest tradition of democracy in africa.
finally i found out how to post the democracy in dakar video. thanx to marcel!! :o) well this is the first episode including interviews with keyti, witness and baat sen which was released during the election time in feburary 2007. actually there were so many people coming to senegal for making a reportage about the local hip hop movement in the last years, but none of them was catching the senegalese life so real like the deomocracy in dakar team. one reason i think is that the founder of the project ben herson used to come to senegal and work with senegalese artists for a long time. another reason is that you can discover real underground mc's who are not used to get interviewed that much by journalists from abroad. well i can just repeat myself and say that i love this documentary. not only because it has started in my apartment, but also because i know the senegalese hip hop movement quiete well and that's why i know how hard it is to make things move here.

Since it is possible to add youtube videos on a blog, I was thinking that might be interesting to share at least a nice project made by Ben Herson called DEMOCRACY IN DAKAR with you guys. Well what a nice idea, if it would work to really add a video and not only a code. :o( After I spent the whole afternoon trying to post my blog including the video I am giving up now... (If someone can help me to post a video please let me know!!!) Still I think the project should be shared with you that's why here the link to my myspace blog: blog.myspace.com/index.cfm
The Democracy in Dakar Project is an interactive multi media project founded by Nomadic Wax/Notable and co produced with Sol Productions. Its goal is to document the democratic process as it unfolds on the Streets of Dakar through documentary film, audio recordings and ethnographic research. From February 14th to March 12th, the production team was in Dakar working with local activists, politicians, journalists and artists. A mixture of journalism, academic inquiry, internet reality TV, and hip hop activism, the Democracy in Dakar project documented this historic period of time in its entirety.
