the analogue experience

Friday April 25, 2008 at 07:47AM

When I was tidying up my room, I stumbled across several boxes of slides, once again. There's a complete rack full of that stuff. Actually I'd like to store the boxes somewhere in the most rearward repository I could find. But first I musted look through all the old pictures.

Then I rediscovered my old slide scanner.

And began to scan. Slides of 1995. Negatives of 1977. And the story continues still. There is so much stuff, enough for years. Too much to scan it all. Too much to look it all through. But there are some really great moments, I remember, recorded on filmstrips. I want to fish for them and save them for the digital era. I'm just beginning.

By the way I found a 3 years old negative film in my beloved old Olympus OM camera. There were 3 or 4 images remaining. I took them in the last days and let develop the film. It was such a surprisingly good feeling to use my old camera and to see a little later some really nice black and white pictures!

So I'm thinking on a little come back of the analogue photography for me. Not for the every day shots, but for some special occasions. I love to have this alternative and I'll like to use it.

Totally agree, analogue has a special feeling! I fished my old Zenit from the boxes some 6 months ago and it feels great!

Digital makes it all fast and convenient, but there is a good feeling when you have to wait and see what results you've got on a film. The feel of a simple camera without all the fancy stuff is cool too. And it's great to find that old box of prints and just sit and go through them again without having to sit at a computer.

digital is a drag, it's like a childs toy. Video games, with a film camera, all you need is light and film, a little water and some chemicals, paper etc,... sure it's amazing what digital can do, but what it can't do is photography. It's another tool for making images.
ever had a roll of film crash on you? Ever have digital lag with a manual analog camera? Do people stop you in the street and admire your old school digital cameras? Why is photography old school? New school is digital. School. oops deleted my assignments.
The best thing about digital is that is gets people who used to do photography thinking in terms of image making again. when ever I get the urge to buy into digital, I look through a stack of 1950's,60's'70's popular photographic, american photo, modern photography, afterimage etc,... magazines, and then I'll covet the pentaxes leicas hasselblads rolleis etc,... Leica m8 crops the lenses, Nikon D3 looks like a newspaper reproters camera from the 80's 90's both cost 5000 dollars. A Holga starts to have a little bit of soul.
