Video link

Today I received the following link to a very moving video. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cjwI26-zV74

I am not writing a comment about it because what can one say about such actions?

Man Ray's movies

Man Ray was not only a photographer but an artist who experimented in various artforms. As Jean-Hubert Martin described his photographic works "[Man Ray] explored every avenue, from the most orthodox to the most inventive, never allowing himself to be hemmed in by social conventions."

Man Ray's work is multifaceted and varied. To appreciate a glimpse of his genius, here is a link to a site (click on the picture below) where you can watch some of his films. Enjoy and please share your thoughts.

Bullfrog Brown Blues: a new discovery

Blues is the music of life. That's what I think. It transcends borders, nationalities, and all other sorts of divisions artificial and contrived. Blues speaks directly to the soul.

Long time ago, I played bass in a blues band "The Windbreakers Blues Band" --yes pun is intended. Unfortunately, the band disbanded following a very tragic event--the drummer who was a very good friend of mine passed away at the age of 29 following a brain aneurism--and mandatory military service which took the rest of the band members away for a year. Yes, there is material here for a great blues piece.

Yesterday, chatting with my friend Sally Gal, she told me about a blues band, Bullfrog Brown, from the town she lives in Tartu, Estonia. I went to their site on Myspace and listened to some of their songs. All I could say is FANTASTIC. Although classified as alternative, and aside from the band name, they have a very authentic delta blues sound and rythm. Very cool stuff. Have a listen and enjoy.

How it came to be

Smoke
Smoke
This is the picture which started this series: an attempt at smoke picture.

I was not very happy with the result because it is not really what I was aiming for. I do like the lines and smooth surface the long exposure and the smoke created but I didn’t think it was good enough to stand on its own and I was not going for a minimalist picture. I wanted something more dynamic showing all the movement and the turbulence that smoke emanating from an incense stick goes through as it rises and mixes with the air.

However, and maybe because I stared at this

picture for a long time I started seeing things in it like when staring at a cloud long enough you start seeing all sorts of images and things in it. One of the things that I saw in this image is a female form. Ideas started flowing about how to exploit this vision. I imported the picture into Corel Painter and drew the lines to complete and suggest the female form I saw. I am not that good at drawing especially from memory. Nonetheless, this made me want to pursue exploration of this image a bit further to create a photomontage using some other pictures I had stashed away as stock for composites. In particular, I thought of part of a photo I had: one of a statue. I thought I could sandwich the two images and create the form I have seen in the smoke image. This is the image I used. I sandwiched the two together and then proceeded to change colors and

blending to create the image I had in my mind. The result is what I called “Nude Sleeping”.

This is a process I often go through: taking pictures just because something pushes me to take the picture. I am not necessarily thinking of what I want to do with it. Those are what I call stock pictures I set aside for composite work. A few weeks, months or maybe a year later another picture reminds me of something or some other picture I stashed away. That’s when the ideas start flowing and as I work with the images many more ideas start popping up making it all the more exciting. I love doing this experimental work with composites creating new scenes and images which exist only in the imagination by sandwiching images of real things together and watching how they interact to generate an entirely new thing.
