I remember when I took Arabic classes at the University, it was quite different from just ordering coffee in different dialects in the Middle East or having small conversations. A lot of verbs and grammar at the University, and little coffee time ;). Best of luck Gina, its fun to learn !

its difficult but fun .. I can read and write some standard arabic. Nobody in the Arabic world speak standard Arabic tough, just different dialects (but sometimes its spoken on TV etc). Language is very fascinating, and it tells so much about the people who live in the area, their culture and history.

Too bad you haven't an arabian keyboard!
Hmmm...now I have a question: Is it possible to write such language with a PC?

I think it's not only there with the standard. As I learned for my German-Exam I noticed that most of the kids have a dialect or colloquial speech (if it was the correct Translation for "Umgangssprache"). And if non-native speaker try to learn German they were all the time confronted with the different between "school" and "normal life".

it's possible but one need a proper keyboard :)
You know, I had German for five years at school but can't speak one single comprehensible word of it ... exactly for the reasons you stated. Nobody speaks German like we learned it ;D

klasse! sprichst du noch andere Sprachen bzw. hast du Erfahrung damit, außer dem Schulenglisch meine ich??
Mich würde ja noch spanisch interessieren oder vielleicht französisch?! Auch portugiesich klingt sehr, sehr interessant!

Also mein Englisch habe ich ja dank Internet auffrischen können. Nur beim Sprechen gibts noch dezente Hemmungen. Hatte ja auch einige Jahre Russisch, aber ohne Übung verliert sich das Gelernte irgendwo im Nirvana des eigenen Kopfes, leider. Denn mir hatte das schon Spaß gemacht, mit den kyrillischen Buchstaben zu jonglieren.
Und Italienisch hab ich ja grad erst angefangen. War nicht leicht, sich dafür zu entscheiden. Ich weiß auch nicht, ob ichs durchhalte, weil soviel zu lernen ist in diesem (eigentlich letzten) Semester.

Ok, interessieren ist eins. Würdest Du es auch in Angriff nehmen wollen? Was von den dreien würde Dich am meisten reizen? Ich weiß nur, dass von 1,5 Jahren Französisch in der Schule grad mal hängen geblieben ist, was ich jetzt in Italienisch gelernt habe: Name, wohnen und sowas. War sau schwer für mich. Wobei, hier hätteste ja genug Möglichkeit, im Schriftlichen zu üben, hihi...

Ja, in Angriff nehmen auf jeden Fall! Ich würde dann aber vermutlich zu einem VHS Kurs greifen müssen....toll, dass du das in der Uni machen kannst.
Aber, ab Montag läuft erstmal ein Fotokurs bei der VHS, da bin ich schon seeeeehr gespannt.

Hihihi, von meinem Schulfranzösisch (ich glaub 3 Jahre?) ist auch nicht so sehr viel hängen geblieben, außer vielleicht, dass mich irgendwann die Grammatik gekillt hat! Aber, ganz weg sind die Sachen nie.....wenn du jetzt nach Russland fahren würdest, würde bestimmt einiges wiederkommen.

Na das geht doch auch mit der VHS... denk ich mal... habe vor ein paar Jahren auch einiges darüber gemacht. Unter anderem auch im Bereich Fotografie. Bin da das erste mal so richtig bewusst auf Selbstportraits gebracht worden...

Hat Dein Kurs ein bestimmtes Thema? Wäre schön, wenn Du von dem ein wenig berichten würdest, wenn er angelaufen ist.

Wegen Russland... mir fällt da immer wieder eine Anekdote eines Bekannten ein, der dorthin musste zum arbeiten, aber kein Wort russisch sprach.
Er stolperte mal über eine Delle im Bodenbelag in einem Cafe und rief vor sich hin: Scheiß Linoleum. Daraufhin bekam er einen Tee mit Zitrone. So in etwa heißt das im Russischen nämlich: Tschai s lemonom (Ich geben keine Garantie, dass ich das jetzt richtig geschrieben habe, zumal es eh nicht kyrillisch ist...)
So lernt man vor Ort eine Sprache, hihi...

Ich war mal fliessend in Italienisch, vor ca. 20 Jahren. Aber wenn man eine Sprache nicht staendig spricht, vergisst man sie sehr schnell. Heute kann ich mich nur muehsam mit meinen beiden Enkeln in Italien unterhalten.

Ich habe Italienisch im Land selber gelernt, mit Topolino (Micky Maus Heften). Meine Neffen hatten sehr viele dieser Comics, und da kommt es auf jedes einzelne Wort an. Wenn du ein Wort nicht verstehst, verstehst du den ganzen Sinn des Comics nicht - anders in einem Buch, wo man auch mal was ueberlesen kann, und was sowieso viel anstrengender (konzentriert) zu lesen ist. Also war ich gezwungen, einzelne Woerter nachzuschlagen.

Aber ich habe nie gelernt, die Sprache zu schreiben. Und wenn ich einen Brief auf Italienisch bekomme, muss ich ihn laut lesen, damit ich es hoere und dadurch verstehe.

Bist Du in Italien aufgewachsen oder in Deutschland? Bin grad leicht verwirrt wegen den 20 Jahren und dem nicht schreiben.
Aber es ist doch schon mal was, dass Du eine Methode gefunden hast, Deine "Schwachstelle" mit dem Geschriebenen dennoch nutzen zu können..

Nein, ich bin in Deutschland aufgewachsen, war aber vor Jahren mal mit einem Italiener verheiratet.

ok this is my last comment in english to u...from now on we go for italian...anyway the problem with radios is that in general the dj tals fast...i mean that´s part of theyr talent...but u might find something easier at late night...there is a program called Rai stereo notte...check if they stream it....buona fortuna

Italians speaking slowly?mmmmm I don't know if it's anyone... MY SUGGESTION: DVD, buy wonderful Italian movies, They have plenty, Visconti, Pasolini, Rossi, Petri, Monicelli, Bertolucci. My best suggestion Amici Miei (part 1 and part 2) You will catch nothing but you will be laughing for 30 years in a row. After this you will know two more italian sentences "sono bellissima" and everything with "supercazzo".

hello gina ;) there is definitely something out there that you can listen too. i will keep an eye out, do some browsing... see what i can come up with... when i wanted to practice german, i used to listen to deutche welle. it is fast, but still is better than not listening to anything.
