Yesterday I watched "Persepolis", a movie based on a french comic made by an emigrant from Iran. It is mostly in black&white, but the style of the pictures and the visual language are absolutely unique. This is why I think that everyone interested in the visual world should give it a try. The story is about a young woman in Iran from the time of the shah to the mullahs. By telling only the private views it is very political and it shows that the mullah regime is just another version of third world dictatorship using religion as a disguise.
In one sense, this movie is truly european and not another hollywood adaptation. It has no happy end, it is not oversimplified in its political message. While the colours are black&white, the persons and the characters are not that simple and the movie has some really surprising scenes.
And now, check the timetable of your local cinema, call your friends and go there...
