On May 7, 1915 the British steamship Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland. Approximately 1,200 civilians died including more than 100 U.S. citizens. The incident increased tensions between the neutral U.S. and Germany and helped sway public opinion in favor of entering WWI.
