Ab Oktober 1941 verwendeten die Nationalsozialisten die Großmarkthalle als Sammelpunkt für die Deportation jüdischer Männer, Frauen und Kinder aus Frankfurt und Umgebung. Die Großmarkthalle spielt daher eine bedeutende Rolle innerhalb der Vernichtungsmaschinerie des Holocaust.
Zum 1. Januar 2005 wurde das Areal der Großmarkthalle von der Stadt Frankfurt an die Europäische Zentralbank übergeben, die dort ihren zukünftigen Hauptsitz errichten wird.
Die Großmarkthalle gehört wie der Römer, der Dom, die Hochhauskulisse und der Poelzig - Bau zu den einprägsamen städtebaulichen Wahrzeichen Frankfurts. Sie verkörpert die liberale und soziale Wirtschaftspolitik Ludwig Landmanns in einer großartigen Architektur von europäischem Rang.

Die Realisierung der  bisher veröffentlichten Planung der Architekten Coop Himmelb(l)au wird dieses  den Frankfurter Osten prägende Baudenkmal in unverantwortlichem Maße entstellen und verunstalten.
