RedBubble

Monday September 3rd, 2007 at 09:35AM

After some nudging from various people (Hi Nicole!), I've decided to do something with my photos and as such I'm giving RedBubble a try.

At the moment I've only got a few photos up there for sale, but if anyone feels they might want to purchase one that's not up there, let me know and I'll post it, or we can come to some other agreement.

Let me know how you go David. I have a few there. I've had lots of lookers but no takers.

Yeah I don't have a huge amount of confidence in selling anything, but hey, can't sell it if it's not marked as "for sale" ;-)

Still, it'll be an interesting experiment, and hopefully will pay better than having to do the microstock thing, which I'm not keen on at all.

Nah, people just don't want to pay for photography. If I painted it, I'm sure *someone* would buy it....

Bigoode [Degel] replies:
nope
peoples aren't as used to buy pictures as they are used to pay paints, but it'll come

Good for you! Sales are a strange thing to gauge. I recently had 2 photos in an auction to raise money for cancer research and such. For one, I couldn't understand why it was selected and I really didn't think it would sell (it was a shot of the steering wheel and dash of an old car, all white leather and turquoise paint) and one of my b+w medium format landscapes. Both sold and even though the car pic sold for less (a small print), it was the one with more bidding activity. All to say, try showing shots you may never select yourself : )

Ah good point! If flickr has taught me anything, it's that people's tastes are different to mine.

Looks interesting, am I correct in thinking that they take your work (a jpg image) and turn it into a product like a card or print? I see they also mention t-shirts.

David de Groot replies:
That is correct Steve. They have a base cost for each product, and you add your markup on top.

Interesting approach, I might look into that later. I hate it though that for each and every separate activity you have to upload photos to someplace else, what a hassle. For that I like zooomr's approach as they (will) offer the possibility to sell your photos in an environment set-up and styled like flickr or ipernity. Hopefully the ipernity people will sooner or later look into this as well, it would make it so much easier. On the other hand they say "no pain, no gain"... oh well...

David de Groot replies:
I hear what you're saying. I currently upload to 4 separate sites.
Lots of stuff goes on my home gallery, a bit less on flickr, good shots on ipernity and things I think might sell on RedBubble.
It's quite an overhead, but I'm sticking with it for now until something more reasonable comes along. I looked into Zooomr, but it was flaky and the sales aspect wasn't there yet anyway.

ImageKind [imagekind.com] offer a similar print service. with a great range of printing / framing options. Another bonus is that they allow you to upload the original TIFs of images, up to 1gb, so you can offer full size prints without worrying about compromising print quality.

That is a very interesting conversation here. I think what ever you do, it becomes a very time consuming thing....gosh, it's so hard to make a buck with Photography. Might have a better return going tho the markets a few hours per week :-) the place where you find all those artists

David de Groot replies:
That had actually occurred to me. The risk there is that you usually need to have some product to sell and if it doesn't you're out of pocket.
Of course, actually having something physically there, people are more likely to purchase.

I have thought about printing and mounting some of my stuff to sell at markets. Perhaps we could start some kind of cooperative thing?

BTW ... I am now officially a RedBubble fanboi after about three days. The load time can't be matched, and its design is really nice.

An interesting idea Shaun.

RedBubble is pretty neat. No sales for me yet, but it might prove and effective way to make stock to take to markets...

Shaun Johnston replies:
Certainly - I'm thinking the same thing. $150 for a framed, delivered, 24" print isn't a bad wholesale price.
