QR does not like me...

Wednesday July 25, 2007 at 02:30AM

If I were paranoid, I'd think Queensland Rail had it in for me.

Last night, on the way home, while sitting quietly at the front of the train I noticed we'd stopped between stations (just past Mitchelton). A short while later we started moving backwards and it was at this stage that we overheard the reason for the stop. Apparently, there was an oncoming train coming round the bend on the same track (the only track at this point in time), that we were on.  There seems to have been a signal failure leading to our train being given the go-ahead while the other train was approaching.
Needless to say, we're all ok and survived the potential incident with only the 6 people closest to the drivers compartment knowing anything about it.

Skip forward to this morning. I get dropped off for the train at Ferny Grove, wait around only a couple of minutes for the next train to get it, and board the train.  Just before it's time to pull out, the driver announces the train is now only going to Mitchelton (some 8km short of the city), and busses will run from there due to an accident (apparently there was a car accident somewhere and a car landed upside down on the tracks) on the line.   I figure it's too soon to call Lea to pick me up as she never has her mobile on anyway, and resign to a long trip into town.

We made it to the next station and then sat there for 40 mins waiting for the signal to proceed. At the next stop (Grovely, two stops short of Mitchelton), it's announced the train isn't going any further and there will be busses from here.   There wasn't.  Usually what happens in these circumstances are dedicated busses waiting at the nearest bus stop for the train to come in. This wasn't the case this time.  So I called Lea for a pickup.  (eventually a bus did arrive, but it wasn't going into town, just Brookside, which would have meant a few bus hops to get to town).

So 2 hours late, I arrive at work.   And now I face the prospect of yet another train trip home this arvo...hopefully uneventful.

Yes, QR does not like you. It wants you to join the masses and drive to work : )

Seriously, that sounds like a brutal commute. I used to work for a freight railway and days like that are unwanted all around. They'll have workarounds by tonight if needed. I'll think positive thoughts for you that it will be righted for the trip home : )

I'm taking an earlier train this arvo (have an install to do remotely in Hong Kong this evening and I might as well do it from home). Apparently the trains are working now, but I'll believe it when I get home.

Commuting in Melbourne isn't much fun, but it isn't usually that bad. You have my sympathies.

David de Groot replies:
To be fair, they're usually not bad. Although, come to think of it, I've noticed a degradation in service in the last year or so.

Well apart from work going away in about a month and a half, fine. But on the bright side, I should get a decent golden handshake.

Uh, that sucks! Already a new job in view?

Not overly worried really. The payout should cover quite a few months, and after 7 years doing the same thing I'm due for a short break anyway :)

I can sure sympathise with you David. The time you dropped me off at the vally train station, the train i was waiting for never came. 40mins later, an Ipswich train finally gets there only to find out taht it wouldnt be going any further than Corinda (one stop away from Oxley). So I had to wait there in the dark for another half hour.

As if the increased fares wernt enough to put you off public transport...

Such efficiency we have eh? It's no wonder Brisbane's roads are getting more and more congested really.

I don't know what it is about train systems, but they're all scarily familiar.

hahaha well I'm not a structural engineer or a traffic engineer/modeller, and I still shy away from any job with the word manager in the title.... so maybe not.

i am late for work at least once a fortnight due to QR problems.

i travel to work every day by train. i do this out of a sort of social responsibility to use less fuel. global warming and all that. recently, as an experiment, i drove my car to work for a week and calculated the cost of doing that. it worked out at the same price as the train.

my point is - there is something wrong with a public transport network that costs the same as driving. my car btw is a large VW bus, or kombi as we call them here, and is not exactly efficient.

David de Groot replies:
Yeah I've done similar calculations before, esp. concerning the bus from Samford to Ferny Grove compared to a V8 Valiant Ute. At the time, it cost roughly the same to drive the Ute as it was for the increase in fair from a 3 zone monthly to a 5 zone.
Thus I kept driving to the train station instead of taking the bus.

This week I've driven into work every day, running in the new engine in the Triton. It's not always pleasant (the train is after all a brainless, mostly hassle free trip), but I get there in the same time (or quicker) and it likely costs no more than taking the train (free parking at work).
It's wrong, really wrong.

And they honestly wonder why more people dont take the train or the bus into town.

The house im moving to has only one way into the city, the bus. Now that means that what was a 3 zone trip on the train becomes a 4 zone bus ride and the cost goes up considerably. Would it honestly be too hard to lower the ticket prices or reduce the number of zones?

David de Groot replies:
The zone system is definitely somewhat of an issue. I'm lucky that Ferny Grove station was specifically included in Zone 3, as by location it should be 4. I pity the poor people on the Caboolture or Ipswich lines though - serious money involved on those ones.

-spam- replies:
Like how oxley station is a zone 3 station but the buses from there are zone 4. I know that an extra dollar on the ticket price isnt really much, but when money is tight in the first place it does make an impact.

Im gunna miss being a train kid though...

David de Groot replies:
Eeek! I pay $96 per MONTH for my train ticket (3 zone, Ferny Grove to the City) and make sure I take a couple of ferry trips during the month to eek out a bit more value from it.
